Mott MacDonald appointed on one of Abu Dhabi’s largest infrastructure projects

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) to provide construction supervision services for the infrastructure of Lot 3. This is one of four lots covering 9.6km² of the AED 7 billion South Shamkha development in the United Arab Emirates.

South Shamkha is a mega housing development spread over 39km² which will provide new homes in 43 neighbourhoods. It is situated approximately 12km east of Abu Dhabi International Airport and around 50km from the city of Abu Dhabi. It is hoped the development will become a regional focal point for the vibrant growth of the city and is aligned with Abu Dhabi’s Vision 2030, the Emirate’s roadmap for economic progress.

The project is designed to provide sustainable living communities with a special emphasis on clean, liveable space, large parks and pedestrian friendly landscaped recreation areas. The design also includes shopping and retail areas, mosques, hospitals, clinics, health clubs, schools, playgrounds and entertainment areas.

Mott MacDonald will provide construction supervision for all infrastructure which includes 80km of road works, a 110km wastewater system and 90km of potable water networks, a power distribution system – that includes both primary and secondary substations ensuring constant electricity – a storm water drainage network and provision for a telecommunication network.

Mott MacDonald’s project director Peter Hall said: “This is a significant project for the people of Abu Dhabi and will provide infrastructure for the housing of over 130,000 UAE nationals. The masterplan encompasses all aspects of a self sufficient community. An extensive public transportation system including a metro link will connect the development to the capital."

Musanada’s CEO H.E. Mohammed Al Fahed Al Mehairi commented: “We are pleased to welcome Mott MacDonald to the Musanada family. The announcement of such a strategic partnership is a testament of our commitment to support the government in providing the people of Abu Dhabi with the best quality of life in line with its aim to become one of the top five governments in the world.”

The project is due for completion in 2014.
