Mott MacDonald is project manager and coastal engineer for two Hartlepool coastal studies, UK

Mott MacDonald, the global management, engineering and development consultancy has been appointed project manager and coastal engineer by Hartlepool Borough Council on two projects along the Hartlepool coastline in the north east of England.

Mott MacDonald will carry out a preliminary options study for developing a programme of cost effective coastal defence works between Marine Drive and Pilot Pier, a 2.4km length of coastline around Hartlepool’s headland. In addition, Mott MacDonald will undertake a strategic review to help establish a long-term strategy for the management of the northern section of Hartlepool’s 8km of coastline and its coastal defences.

The consultancy will review the condition and performance of existing coastal defences through detailed surveys and ground investigations as well as holding consultations with stakeholders including national regulatory bodies and local interest groups. Additionally, Mott MacDonald will conduct research, with support from HR Wallingford, using numerical modelling, studies and investigations to formulate recommended strategies that are robust, sustainable and environmentally sensitive for the maintenance and improvement of the coastline.

The two schemes are being developed with Hartlepool Borough Council to ensure sustainable strategies are in place for the future protection of Hartlepool’s residents and their properties as well as the protection and enhancement of existing environmental habitats.

Project director Peter Phipps said, “Mott MacDonald is delighted to be appointed to these two important projects, which we hope will provide long-term sustainable solutions for the ongoing coastal protection of the people and property of Hartlepool. The projects are being assessed in order to also benefit from Mott MacDonald’s cost and carbon modelling tool, LifeCYCLE, which enables the carbon associated with constructing, upgrading and operating assets to be substantially reduced.

“We have demonstrated with Hartlepool Borough Council that by combining the two separate projects and running their delivery in parallel with a single consultant, that significant project efficiencies can be achieved.” Peter added.

The preliminary option study is due to be completed by mid 2011, while the strategy review is due to be finished early 2012, prior to obtaining formal acceptance by the Environment Agency. Both projects are being funded through the Environment Agency's Flood Defence Grant in Aid budgets.
