Technical and commercial innovation
With Anglian Water, contractors Black & Veatch and GTM, and principal technology providers Cambi and Monsal, we developed two enhanced digestion techniques, implemented at four treatment facilities, that have reduced operating costs by £3M/year. Enhanced digestion improves the conversion of organic matter to water and biogas.
The gas is harvested and used to generate heat and power, making the four plants self-sufficient in renewable energy. The enhanced digestion process also enabled Anglian Water to consolidate its sludge treatment activities, taking advantage of spare digester capacity at existing sites. At the same time, treatment capacity was increased from the baseline target by 30%.
The combination of eliminating old lime treatment techniques, removing water, and converting more solids to gas has reduced the total volume of biosolids leaving Anglian Water’s sludge treatment plants by 40%.
Realising Anglian Water’s goals required commercial innovations contributing to a £9M programme-wide saving on a projected £100M capital cost.
