CzechAid appointed our local team in Prague as a specialist consultant to assist with the rehabilitation of critical areas in upper watersheds, flood protection and improvements to water quality and the efficiency of irrigation systems. Key project outputs including the identification of critical lands and the development of plans for rehabilitation, such as recommended agronomic, forestry, and engineering measures.
Another aim involved strengthening the capabilities of the regional and line planning institutions responsible for integrated watershed management and improving public participation in the use of natural resources following government decentralisation. Our demonstration of rehabilitation technology focused on the application of Czech expertise on model projects.
The project resulted in a transfer of technology to the regional governments, a strengthening of public participation in the planning of watersheds and rural infrastructure and the identification of institutional co-ordination including NGOs. Demonstrations were also given of mitigation measures such as regreening, reforestation and engineering techniques for slope stabilisation and irrigation scheme rehabilitation. We also provided specialist mapping services and carried out an inventory of critical lands. Provincial spatial plans were recommended and an action programme of rehabilitation – involving regreening, reforestation, and erosion control – was introduced with ecological planning for watersheds.
