Mott MacDonald to manage the development of Community Skills Development Centres in Namibia

Mott MacDonald has been awarded a contract for the design, environmental and social impact assessment and construction supervision of eight Community Skills Development Centres across Namibia for the Millennium Challenge Account Namibia (MCA-N). Five existing centres will be upgraded and three will be new build.

The centres are being developed through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which is a US Government initiative that works in partnership with the governments of a number of developing nations through agreements such as MCA-N. The centres are to be part of MCA-N’s Education Project supporting Namibia’s Education and Training Sector Improvement Programme. This programme aims to improve the competency and knowledge of young Namibians through new and innovative methods of learning.

Mott MacDonald will design the centres, conduct environmental and social impact assessments as well as supervise construction of the centres. The consultancy will certify that all work on the centres is completed in accordance with quality, time and cost specifications while also checking that Namibian environmental legislation and social policies, as well as the environmental and social guidelines of the MCC, are complied with.

Mott MacDonald’s project director Greig Hamilton said, “These centres will help to provide a high quality learning environment for disadvantaged individuals throughout Namibia. We will specify materials that can be sourced locally in Namibia for use in the design and construction of the centres.”

“Mott MacDonald is delighted to be involved in this important project, which will help support Namibia’s Education and Training Sector Improvement Programme’s long-term aims, which include increasing the overall competency of the Namibian workforce,” Greig added.

Construction of the development centres is due to be completed late 2012.
