A programme to decarbonise Europe’s busiest airport
It’s time to transform your approach to energy
As a large infrastructure organisation, there’s never been a more important time to cut energy use and decarbonise your operations.
You need to take action to remain competitive, protect yourself against rising energy prices, ensure regulatory compliance, safeguard your reputation and to attract customers, investors and staff. It’s about transforming the way you use energy across your whole operation: buildings, processes, vehicle fleets, machinery and more. Energy transformation can help you save money, earn additional revenues, reduce your carbon footprint, become more resilient and prepare you for the future.
What can we do for you?
Mott MacDonald designs and delivers complex long-term energy transformation programmes for infrastructure organisations who are large energy users.
An energy transformation programme is a long-term, strategic initiative to significantly change energy consumption, supply and storage with the aim of reaching net-zero carbon. It typically spans multiple years and covers multiple energy vectors (electricity as well as fuels such as hydrogen).
We help transform your business through market positioning, improved site planning, building use and energy efficiency, and the adoption of lower carbon technologies and processes.
We develop strategy and roadmaps, and help you implement the changes required to your physical and digital infrastructure.
Your transformation journey
There are four ‘pillars’ of energy transformation programmes that we can help you with along your journey to net zero:
1 . Overall strategy, data and monitoring
We act as a project-shaper, developing the strategy, managing the transformation programme and helping you build business cases for investment and partnerships for delivery.
We help you devise and implement a roadmap for your journey to net zero. We’ll assess your physical infrastructure needs, design and support the delivery of your capital programme, and help you with procurement, supply chain and financing strategies.
We take a holistic view, considering operational impacts, embedded carbon in infrastructure, behaviour change and climate resilience planning among many other factors.
2. Electricity consumption, generation, storage and networks
We help with all aspects of your electrification and electricity decarbonisation journey and related engineering needs. This includes metering your existing estate; modelling demand in future scenarios; and assessing the viability of options such as demand side response and flexibility, on-site generation and storage, and vehicle-to-grid solutions. We support you in assessing technology options, sizing for capacity, available land and revenue potential, consenting, procurement, construction surveillance and asset management.
We will assess your network capacity needs and provide engineering services for upgrades, new connections, microgrids and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. We provide digital asset planning and optimisation support; and can help you decommission any fossil-fuel back-up generation and infrastructure when the time is right.
3. Fuel consumption, supply, storage and pipelines
We help you plan for the transition to lower carbon fuels, model your demand for different scenarios and provide advice on fuel switching.
We can advise on all key alternative fuels – from hydrogen to green ammonia, e-fuels, biofuels and sustainable aviation fuels – and on the public and private funding mechanisms available.
We provide engineering services for terminals and storage facilities, production facilities (including electrolysers), pipelines and networks. We can help with concept development, design, consenting, procurement, construction surveillance and fuel handling issues, and we can help you decommission existing fossil fuel infrastructure.
4. Buildings, heating and cooling
We work with you to improve the whole-life environmental and energy performance of your built estate. Our experts conduct energy efficiency audits, deliver waste minimisation projects, and design retrofit programmes.
We design infrastructure to standards which cut operational carbon and reduce energy costs, such as BREEAM, LEED, Green Star, Estidama and CEEQUAL. We assess energy use for heating and cooling requirements and provide advice on technology selection and sizing for low carbon options.
We provide digital asset planning and optimisation support, either using your existing tools, our own, or partnering with suitable providers.
Our experience
We have advised a range of clients on their net zero and energy transformation journeys, including Heathrow Airport, George Best Belfast City Airport, Stansted Airport, Associated British Ports (Port Talbot), Global Centre of Rail Excellence, National Highways, Anglian Water, Sunderland International Advanced Manufacturing Park, the NHS, the Environment Agency and Barbados’ Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
We would be delighted to discuss with you how our expertise can help transform your approach to energy.
