Why did you decide to join Mott MacDonald?
I wanted a move from a contractor to a consultancy in order to gain experience of managing people as well as progressing my design skills.
What is the best thing about your role?
I like the variety including technical design, project management, business development and leading a team. The office location is very important to me as I have young children in school in Sheffield; however being in a regional office is not a disadvantage as I have worked on projects throughout the UK and overseas.
How would you describe your role and responsibilities to your family and friends?
A job with good variety and some interesting and technically complex engineering projects.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
There is a good culture of knowledge sharing, staff development, embracing change and providing technical and professional excellence in multi-disciplinary projects.
What has been your most memorable project?
A £250M DBFO (Design Build Finance Operate) highway scheme in North Yorkshire where I spent 3-years full time seeing the scheme from tender to detailed design, construction and certification. It was memorable because it covered almost every aspect of ground engineering design and construction.
What project will be one you tell your kids about?
I tell my kids about all my interesting jobs. My 7 year old son knows how to build a road, can name every type of bridge that we pass in the car and has an interest and some understanding of secondary school mathematics. Previously he wanted to drive a digger when he grew up but now he is wondering if he will be an architect or engineer.
Where have you travelled with Mott MacDonald?
Singapore, Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Croydon, Birmingham, Altrincham, Newcastle and Leeds.
What’s the most technically challenging project you’ve worked on at Mott MacDonald?
The East Region Line, Singapore as it comprised the design of 5 new underground stations in deep soft ground with high ground water and existing tall buildings within such a close proximity.
How has your career developed at Mott MacDonald?
From working as a project engineer to project manager and from delivering individual items of work to a leading position in the management of a team of 10 people.
How have you been supported during your career development?
Coaching and mentoring on commercial and quality issues from project directors, technical support from structural engineers and senior geotechnical engineers in other offices as well as taught training courses including Managing People For Excellence and Managing Mott MacDonald Projects.
When you’re not in the office where can you be found?
On a crag, in the hills or at the sea side.
