Why did you join Mott MacDonald?
I had a lifelong interest in aviation and a friend of mine from Loughborough University was already working here in the Aviation team at Mott MacDonald. He recommended it as a place to work, and the range of projects they were undertaking at the time made it the place to be. 14 years on, the rest is history.
What is the best thing about your role?
During my time within the Aviation sub-division I have worked on a wide range of projects covering due diligence, construction monitoring, airport operations monitoring, airspace assessments, and the review and design of helipads and airports. And every so often I get to travel to exotic locations such as Syria, Cyprus or Costa Rica, to name a few!
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
Mott MacDonald has a “client facing” culture, looking to meet their needs through innovation and a drive to continuously improve.
What project will be one to tell the kids about?
I have had the opportunity to work on airport projects around the world, getting to travel to many of them including four in Honduras; a proposed airport in Damascus, Syria; and the current project in Costa Rica. But my key project, which the kids already probably know too much about, has to be the Cyprus Airports Concession.
I started on the Cyprus project in 2005, when the sites for the new terminals were just fields and olive groves and, with monthly visits (including visits within weeks of the birth of both my children!), I took the project through the three year construction period. This has therefore been “daddy’s airport” since they were babies, culminating in the official opening of the Larnaca terminal taking place on my 40th birthday!
When you’re not in the office where can you be found?
I am a season ticket holder at Luton Town FC (my old hometown club) and so on Saturdays during the football season I can often be found at Kenilworth Road, usually with one of the children in tow. When not there then the need to keep two young kids entertained normally keeps me busy.
If you had a super power what would it be?
Flight, or the ability to breathe underwater – I’ve flown helicopters and scuba dive and it would be good to do both or either without the need for mechanical help.
