What attracted you to apply for a role with us?
Fresh out of A levels, I joined Mott MacDonald on a quantity surveying degree apprenticeship. I knew joining Mott MacDonald would mean I had access to great training and lots of support from industry leading professionals. Mott MacDonald offered me the chance to work on a wide range of projects around the world. I was immediately interested at the idea of travel, flagship projects and diverse work.
How did you find the recruitment process?
The recruitment process was simple. I signed up online, sat two tests and was then invited to interview, with my now current manager. I was made to feel at ease in my interview when expressing my concerns regarding lack of experience.
What are the three things that make you look forward to coming into work each day?
I look forward to the work diversity. The people, the experiences, and the knowledge I gain.
The diversity of work I take part in ranges from education schemes to defence schemes. The knowledge and experience I gain from working on these projects are irreplaceable. The industry leading professionals offer learning like no other – I learn from the best in the business!
Most importantly I look forward to seeing the people, my team, who make bad days, good. The broad range of people and backgrounds I work alongside offer a great working environment.
What’s your team like?
My team is fantastic, very supportive and great to work with. As a small team we work quite closely together, checking each other’s work and offering guidance when needed. We have a great relationship in and outside of work - catching up outside work on a Friday etc.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The best part about my job is being part of ‘building back better’ (through carbon initiatives) and building facilities for clients, that will last for generations. It’s fantastic to handover a school to a client and know the facility I have just handed over will have helped and will better several generations of learning.
How has your career progressed since joining?
From starting out as an apprentice to now being an assistant, I have gained so much knowledge. I now lead smaller schemes alone and mentor other staff – offering 5D BIM training when required.
I now look to complete the final year of my degree and undertake professional chartership with the RICS. This will mean in under 6 years becoming a fully qualified chartered quantity surveyor.
How long have you worked for us, and what has been your proudest achievement to date?
I have worked at Mott MacDonald for nearly four years and how time is flown! My proudest achievement was being lead quantity surveyor on a school’s project - with only senior guidance when necessary.
What is your favourite pastime?
My favourite past time is trying new things and exploring new places. By living in Sheffield since birth, I am lucky to be so close to the Peak District, which I love to walk frequently. The scenery is always breath taking.
If you could have lunch with any three people who would they be and why?
Ant & Dec – Fantastic comedians, TV legends with a great friendship! Loved watching them on I’m a celeb since I was a kid.
Barrack Obama – Changed the way politics operated forever and has a full, fantastic life story.
David Attenborough – Well travelled, very intelligent and all-round knowledgeable guy – ensiling change in his entire life until late 90s.
