Why did you decide to join Mott MacDonald?
I joined as a graduate 38 years ago and chose Mott MacDonald on the recommendation as a very professional firm that was going places. I have never regretted taking that advice and have seen the company grow from 800 to 17,000. I’ve been fortunate enough to been able to set up our aviation team from scratch over 25 years ago and see the portfolio grow to the definition of World Class.
What is the best thing about your role?
As global sector leader for aviation I get to meet many people around the World. Our structure gives staff at all levels significant mobility for short and long term. I’m currently leading the master planning and redevelopment commission at New York JFK Airport, bringing it back to World Class status whilst living in the Big Apple for 18 months. I’ve previously been assigned to Hong Kong.
I’m able to share in our mutual enthusiasm for working in the sector. I enjoy being able to spend valued time on complex projects making a difference to the outcomes. As a former Chairman of the British Aviation Group I also spend time promoting UK products and services around the world, working with companies and their customers of all sizes.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
Employee ownership is at the heart of our culture. The structure and ethos provides the guidance, flexibility and support to those who want to develop new business avenues to do so. The ownership structure promotes collaboration between offices and project performance is completely transparent. We all work on first name basis and there are no closed doors.
Where have you travelled with Mott MacDonald?
I’ve travelled to over 50 countries whilst working with Mott MacDonald.
When you’re not in the office where can you be found?
Behind a camera (or in an aircraft). Landscape, wildlife, studio, airports and aircraft. I’m rarely seen travelling without a camera. Interspersed with road cycling and watching sports.
If you could have any super power what would it be?
Travel at the speed of light!
