Why did you choose to join Mott MacDonald?
In 2003, having returned to my home in the South West of England, after travelling through North America and Australasia for 6 months, I set about researching where/who to begin my career with. When I was first made aware of an opportunity in Bristol with Mott MacDonald, I’ll admit that I didn’t know much about them! After examining the corporate website it was clear to me that Mott MacDonald was a very large and successful global company with an excellent reputation.
I was put in touch with their Bristol office where I was struck by the openness and enthusiasm of the management, who at the time were busy starting up a new contract with a local authority. It was clear that there would be a wide variety of work for me to participate in and many exciting opportunities for me to develop my knowledge and skills. Following our initial meeting, I jumped at the chance to join them and have worked for Mott MacDonald ever since.
What is the best thing about your role?
Everybody wants to feel like they are contributing to making the business successful. I’m very lucky in my role; I get to experience peoples' enthusiasm and passion for improving what we do first hand. My role involves harnessing that enthusiasm and helping make those ideas a reality!
I also love the variety of interaction that I experience in my role. I can go from dealing with site operatives in a depot one day to meeting divisional directors the next.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
I would describe the culture as open, friendly and helpful where individuals are encouraged to take part in project based decision making and empowered to take responsibility for their own work and learning.
How would you describe your role and responsibilities to friends or family?
I’m the lean improvement manager for Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald – which is a joint venture with Balfour Beatty. This means that I’m responsible for improving all aspects of our business across two Highways Agency Area contracts.
What project are you currently working on?
I’m currently working in Highways Agency Areas 4 and 10 examining ways of enhancing our use of lean visual management techniques for the purpose of further improving the safe and efficient delivery of maintenance work.
When you’re not in the office where can you be found?
On the golf course trying to reduce my handicap or with my children trying to get them interested in golf!
If you were stranded on a desert island, what are the five things that you would want to have with you?
BBQ / umbrella / fishing tackle / my family / a sailing boat!
