Climate change adaption plan, Republic of Ireland
The many ways that climate change may affect communities is a major concern for governments, which is why the Irish Government engaged Mott MacDonald to create an adaptation plan that would guide and protect the water sector.
Together with the national and local government, utilities, academics and environmental agencies, our team identified the most important opportunities to make the systems that keep the country supplied with sustainable water and wastewater services resilient against climate change. Aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, it helped link governmental guidelines with international efforts to tackle climate change.
This resulted in important first steps in climate change adaptation planning for Ireland's water industry, with a plan that provided multiple sectors with a collaborative set of priority actions and adaptive measures. It sets a benchmark against future plans and how they will be measured. Following six weeks of public consultation, it was approved by the Irish government and is now guiding the water sector to take action.
Making the new longest bridge in Ireland a reality
The construction of this new bypass involved creating the new longest bridge in Ireland and was commissioned to take articulated lorries out of New Ross - a major transport bottleneck in South East Ireland. Mott MacDonald had previously been involved with the award-winning N25 Waterford Bypass that opened in 2009, so were brought into this project to act as technical advisor to Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
The now completed bypass includes the engineering excellence of the new Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy bridge, a new three tower extrados bridge over the River Barrow that is the longest of its kind in the world and uses as much steel as the Eiffel Tower, as well as 15km of road and over 40 additional structures. From being involved in the original feasibility study in 1999, Mott MacDonald brought the project successfully through to approval and financial close, as well as design review and construction monitoring services.
Opening in 2019, the new bypass now welcomes upwards of 15,000 cars a day and is allowing commuters, families, businesses and tourists to travel quicker and easier between County Kilkenny and County Wexford.
Clonakilty Flood Storage Area
Voted “Best Place in Ireland” by the Royal institute of Architects of Ireland, Clonakilty is a coastal tourist hub town in West Cork that is home to some 5,000 people and has been recognised as Ireland’s first Fair Trade Town.
Mott MacDonald recently completed a project to protect the Clonakilty from fluvial flooding while preserving the visual amenity of the town by creating a 283,000m2 flood storage area. When flows in the nearby river Fealge exceed the capacity of the town’s channel, excess flow of up to 625,000m3 of flood water will now be stored there until the flooding recedes.

Mechanical engineering jobs in Ireland
As a mechanical engineer in one of our teams, you’ll be exposed to a number of areas and have the chance to undertake mechanical design across a range of disciplines.
