Why did you choose to join Mott MacDonald?
I have wanted to work for Mott MacDonald for some time because of the reputation for being focused on their people and the variety of work undertaken. My career put me in a position where I was able to identify a niche for myself within Mott MacDonald managing a client on the South Coast near my family. My managers put their faith in me to establish a new service from the Brighton office into the Water Industry. It was that trust in people and willingness to take calculated risks that reinforced that Mott MacDonald was where I wanted to be.
What is the best thing about your role?
My role as a Framework Manager is to represent Mott MacDonald with clients. This means that I spend a lot of time talking to people within Mott MacDonald to find the best people to serve the client at any time and then am ultimately responsible for the quality and cost of the work that we deliver. The best part of my role is seeing the difference that our work is making with the client, growing new services and teams and often being the first point of call to receive feedback. I enjoy the variety of the work on a day to day basis with over 100 live projects which at any time might need attention. The challenge is maintaining the relationships and systems to be able to identify risks and opportunities early when there is a chance to influence them.
How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?
The culture is one that puts people first which I believe stems from the employee owned nature of the company. It feels that we are given the freedom to steer our own careers and the corporate structure means that if you have a good idea backed with a business case you are trusted to deliver; with support available when needed.
How many years have you worked for Mott MacDonald, and what has been your proudest achievement to date?
I have worked for Mott MacDonald for 3 years and my proudest achievement has been growing a new Water Industry team in Brighton from just me to 14 people over 2012/13. This was my ambition when joining and seeing the team develop and gel together gives me a lot of satisfaction.
When you’re not in the office where can you be found?
Outside the office I am never far from water whether that is taking my two boys swimming, canoeing or surfing. When I am not in the water I am checking surf forecasts and planning my next trip.
If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?
I would buy some land in the west country and start to plan to build our ‘grand design’ family home with enough room for my two competitive sons to bounce off each other and their parents to escape and find peace.
