United Kingdom / Degree Apprenticeship

Why you chose an apprenticeship?

After my GCSE’s I stayed at school and completed my A levels, I was unsure during this time if I wanted to go to university or complete an apprenticeship. My school always pushed towards university and getting a degree straight away. However, over my time studying I realised that a degree apprenticeship was best for me. I investigated the apprenticeship route in more detail and started to realise the massive benefits of getting onto one. One of the main being that I could still study for my degree whilst gaining valuable work experience. This meant that any troubles or questions I had regarding my degree course could be answered by my colleagues. Another major benefit that drew me to an apprenticeship was the fact you got paid whilst studying.

What do you like about doing and apprenticeship?

Whilst on the apprenticeship I have been able to develop my knowledge and understanding of practices within civil engineering that I would not have been able too otherwise. This has meant that I have been trusted with more responsibility within projects and I have been able to challenge myself within tasks. I have enjoyed that on the apprenticeship I have been able to experience both onsite and office working, this has included agile working throughout the pandemic. This has shown me how the work I complete within the office transfers onto construction sites. A major benefit of the apprenticeship for me personally has been how agile the working hours can be. I currently play for Cefn Druids Futsal Club Wales and represent them within the UEFA Futsal Champions League. I have also previously represented England Under 19’s and these both require a high amount of training and travelling worldwide. I originally worried that the apprenticeship would restrict my time to continue with these, but due to the apprenticeship being flexible, I have been able to adapt my training hours around my working hours to ensure I can continue with this.

What are your future goals?
When I finish this apprenticeship, I hope to progress to a level 4 apprenticeship where I hope I can further develop my skills and continue learning about the industry. I’m excited for the opportunities I’ll have and the challenges once I have achieved my qualifications.
