Paul on his travels

United Kingdom / Water / Senior civil engineer

Paul Furse

Paul and his wife, Anna at Machu Picchu, Peru – having just completed 3 days walking through the Andes mountains on the Inca Trail."There is also an integral respect for everyone’s work-life balance and the recognition that it’s unique to each person."

Why did you decide to join Mott MacDonald?

When I was in my last year at University I considered a few different engineering consultants. At the interview with Mott MacDonald I met my manager and a couple of other recent graduates who explained their work and the culture – I knew immediately that this was the right place for me. That was over 10 years ago and it still feels like the right place today.

What is the best thing about your role?

I mainly design the plants and infrastructure that provide people with clean, safe, fresh drinking water - it’s important to me that I do something I feel is worthwhile. My day to day work is also incredibly varied, for example a typical day could include preparing design sketches, interrogating a 3D model, meeting a client, report writing, visiting a construction site, checking technical calculations, preparing a budget, or managing a team. Just to list a few.

How would you describe the culture of Mott MacDonald?

Everyone takes pride in their work and trusts you to do a great job, but if you need help or advice the support is always available. There is also an integral respect for everyone’s work-life balance and the recognition that it’s unique to each person.

What has been your most memorable project?

As part of my training to become a chartered engineer I spent two years based on a construction site where I saw my designs being built into a real, fully operational, potable water treatment works. I’ll never forget the feeling of walking around the site and thinking: “I made this”.

When you’re not in the office where can you be found?

Well hopefully you won’t be able to find me at all – I’ll be with my wife on an adventure exploring the world somewhere. Mott MacDonald have been really flexible allowing me to take sufficient leave to get away for long haul trips meaning we've been able to see some amazing sights across the globe and shared some incredible experiences.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?

I'd try to book a trip to the international space station, enrol on astronaut training, or something like that so I could go up in to space. Floating around in zero gravity watching the earth below – that's my dream :-)
