How do you think your Mott MacDonald apprenticeship will help you to achieve your career goals?
Mott MacDonald has been extremely supportive of my career goals. My colleagues are always trying to push me to my limits to make me into the best engineer possible. During my time at the company I have been trained within various aspects of civil engineering and I have been on a rotation scheme to learn about as much of the industry as possible. This has really helped make me into a well-rounded civil engineer and has allowed me to gain my professional qualification with the Institution of Civil Engineers. All of these opportunities will help me meet my aims of becoming an engineering lead and overseeing some of the biggest projects our company has to offer!
What has your proudest moment been since joining Mott MacDonald?
My proudest moment during my time with Mott MacDonald by far was becoming EngTech professionally qualified with the Institution of Civil Engineers. It is a phenomenal feeling to be able to call yourself an engineer.
What has surprised you the most about the apprenticeship?
The freedom at which I can learn has really surprised me with the apprenticeship route. I have a lot of choice about what I can do and how I go about learning certain skills. The extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff I have the joy to work with also make the apprenticeship a fantastic experience. They are the reason I learn so quickly and have progressed my career so much. I fully recommend an apprenticeship route to anyone due to its unique way of learning, and it really offers hands on learners a great way into their chosen industry!
How is Mott MacDonald supporting your learning and development?
Mott MacDonald always strives for the best out of employees and this really shows with the opportunities offered. Young staff are always encouraged to meet their chosen institution requirements and Mott MacDonald will do all that can be done to fulfil this. Opportunities range from academic qualifications to being rotated between various other teams. I have been privileged enough to be offered the chance to study at university under the company’s financial support, and I have also been rotated into various teams for short periods of time. The company encourages me to have experiences away on active construction sites which excites me and opens up my opportunities to learn even further!
We asked Sam's mum for her thoughts on his apprenticeship
Apprenticeships are a really good way of learning whilst earning money. Doing an apprenticeship you learn from people who are doing the job, my son really enjoys his work, has gained confidence and has been very enthusiastic about what he does.
Sam has always worked hard and was in the gifted and talented group at school, but he wasn’t enthusiastic in education. However, now he is dedicated. He seems very proud of his achievements and what the company has helped him with.
My husband and myself are both employed after following apprenticeship type routes.
