Whistler Pipeline
After our client was impressed by our performance on a previous pipeline project, Mott MacDonald was retained to oversee the construction of the new Whistler Pipeline. This 42-inch-diameter pipeline will bring natural gas over 450 miles from West Texas to South Texas.
Our people were essential to many aspects of the Whistler Pipeline construction. Mott MacDonald teams were responsible for project management and controls, procurement, construction planning, engineering, coordinating surveys, carrying out environmental impact assessments and establishing right-of-way from nearly 1,000 different landowners.
Digital team colleagues helped connect these different activities through two of our exclusive software tools, Moata Insights and Fieldbook. Our Moata Insights tool collates critical data on schedules, permits, and budget in real-time dashboards for the client and external stakeholders. Similarly, Mott MacDonald’s Fieldbook software uses GIS mapping to coordinate field activities, plans, and data across different engineering and construction teams.
Collaborating across engineering disciplines has resulted in a safe and successful project execution, even through the challenges of COVID-19. As a result, the Whistler Pipeline will become operational in the third quarter of 2021 and be capable of transporting 2 billion cubic feet of natural gas every day.
Coastal Texas Protection and Restoration Feasibility Project
For this project, Mott MacDonald identified measures to protect vulnerable communities and habitats from coastal storms in over 18 coastal counties. The team created complex models of how storm surges and inland rainfall combine, and used the simulations to identify and test solutions against flooding.
As well as designs for new infrastructure such as pumping stations and flood gates, the team also suggested natural measures such as the restoration of ecosystems and barrier islands to be the first line of defense against storms. The Mott MacDonald teams in Texas collaborated with federal and state agencies to evaluate natural resources, collect geotechnical data, and analyze the potential restorative impact for habitats and wildlife populations.
IH-35 Capital Express Central
IH-35 in downtown Austin is themost congested highway in Texas. Two new managed lanes are being opened in each direction along a significant central stretch of the freeway, and Mott MacDonald is providing tunnel engineering and design support.
These improvements stand to reduce the congestion, remove potential barriers to business and economic development, and set the city of Austin up to accommodate future population growth.
