Opportunity
Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer) was established in 1996 to take over the responsibility of oil refining in the country.
Refining began with the establishment of the Abu Dhabi refinery in 1976 and continued with the Ruwais refinery in 1982, located 155 miles (250 kilometers) west of Abu Dhabi on the Arabian Gulf.
Solution
Mott MacDonald was retained to manage the engineering, procurement and construction packages for the expansion of the Ruwais refinery, including commissioning and initial operation for offsites and utilities, tankage and associated interconnecting piping, and marine facilities.
Outcome
The expanded refinery processes 400,000 barrels of Murban crude oil each day, which it sources from existing pipelines passing to the south of the existing refinery.
Petroleum products are exported via a new, dedicated jetty which runs 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) long and includes three berths.
