Opportunity
The City Rail Link is the top transportation priority for the city of Auckland. It will extend the city's passenger rail system past Britomart and link to the existing regional rail network at Mt. Eden.
Solution
As part of an integrated team led by Aurecon, Mott MacDonald was retained by Auckland Transport as advisor for the first underground railway in New Zealand.
The City Rail Link will use twin tunnels 2.1 miles (3.4 kilometers) long, running 138 feet (42 meters) below the streets of the city center.
We are providing station design, fire and life safety, operations, rail systems, and pedestrian modeling.
Outcome
This new public transport system will support Auckland’s population and economic growth. It is expected to support at least one train every 10 minutes at peak commuting times for most stations in Auckland. Thirty thousand people an hour will use it at peak times.
The City Rail Link will relieve congestion on roads for buses and individual drivers.
