Opportunity
The Vasona Line provides light rail service from downtown San Jose to the City of Campbell. To avoid conflicts with highway traffic and a ground-level freight line, it was decided to build two bridges over Hamilton Avenue and Highway 17.
Solution
Mott MacDonald provided construction management to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, including coordination of rail, utility, signaling, and communications systems.
Outcome
The project, which includes structure foundations up to 70 feet (21 meters) deep, and precast concrete girders up to 120 feet (37 meters) long, was delivered on time and on budget. It provides safe passage for light rail trains, protection for a water main and wastewater diversions, and noise control with the use of textured soundwalls.
