Opportunity
The largest and busiest airport in New Zealand, Auckland Airport is the country’s primary gateway. In 2000, it handled 71% of arrivals and departures for New Zealand's international air passengers. Auckland Airport is one of only two commercial airports in New Zealand that can handle Boeing 747 and Airbus A380 aircraft.
As part of a 30-year expansion plan announced in 2014, Auckland International Airport Limited needed a concept design that would enable a transition from separate domestic and international terminals to a single integrated terminal building.
Solution
Mott MacDonald was selected as the lead consultant for all terminal and airfield planning, passenger simulation modeling, baggage handling system strategy, and architectural and engineering design.
Using the simulation tool AirTOP, we undertook a detailed assessment of stand demand. Our 3D airfield simulation enabled us to assess the impact of aircraft procedures and aircraft flows once the new domestic pier begins operation.
We used the modeling software CAST Terminal to define area requirements and layout configurations for the integrated terminal building. We developed a baggage handling strategy to complement the passenger processing facility.
Outcome
Phase 1 of the expansion will include the development of a single integrated terminal and an improved road network. In Phase 2, a new northern runway will be constructed and the terminal forecourt extended. In Phase 3, the domestic and international piers will be extended, and in Phase 4 the northern runway will be lengthened to about 9,800 feet (3,000 meters).
Our planning work will support a seamless passenger experience and help maintain an optimum level of service and efficient work environment for airport operators. Our airfield planning simulation model will help develop efficiency and flexibility for aprons and taxiways and maximize operational safety for aircraft.
