Mott MacDonald has a long and successful history of working in Canada. Through HMM, a joint venture company of Mott MacDonald and Hatch, we contributed to award-winning high-profile projects including Sea-to-Sky Highway, Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project, and Niagara Tunnel. Mott MacDonald also has an important role in infrastructure financing in Canada.

Our business in North America is thriving. With over 2,300 staff in more than 60 US and Canadian cities, Mott MacDonald is delivering pivotal projects in the transport, water, oil and gas sectors, plus projects in education, power, buildings, and infrastructure finance.

We are independent certifier for a CDN $2.2 billion 772-bed hospital in Montréal, Québec. We have been appointed by the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) Hospital Authority for this design-build-finance-maintain project with a concession period of 30 years.

We have undertaken a number of projects on behalf of the P3 Canada Fund, a merit-based program designed to incentivize the use of public-private partnerships in delivering public infrastructure projects. These include a peer review of costing methodologies for two projects under consideration for investment from the fund and assisting in the development of standardized risk guidance to be used by public sector authorities when applying for P3 funding.

Mott MacDonald was lender's technical advisor for three major venues ahead of the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan America Games: the Hamilton Soccer Stadium, York University Athletics Stadium, and Milton Velodrome. The bundling of three venues in one project agreement required careful provision to ensure lenders were protected if construction was delayed at any one of the sites. Mott MacDonald was instrumental in working with the lenders to achieve financial close.

Transport

We served as owner’s engineer for construction of a new West Line for Calgary’s existing light rail system. Our role encompassed design, schedule development, cost estimating, constructability reviews, risk management, construction monitoring, and quality auditing. The project won awards from the Consulting Engineers of Alberta and the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta.

The Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project encompassed major infrastructure improvements along a 23-mile (37-kilometer) corridor, including building or rehabilitating interchanges and onshore bridges, and totally rebuilding the complex Cape Horn/Lougheed Highway Interchange. Our joint venture was chosen as the senior partner for the design of all the onshore works, using a BIM model that incorporated extensive data from surveys and laser scans of existing infrastructure.

Buildings

Our building team continues to grow, working on a number of significant projects in the country. Our design for Mosaic Stadium in Regina will make playing and watching more comfortable, extending the playing season by two months per year. The stadium roof’s design all but eliminates the effects of wind while allowing sun into the stadium, increasing the operating temperature by up to 20°C throughout freezing winters. The stadium hosted its inaugural football game in October 2016.

Tunnels

Responding to increased demand for electricity, Ontario Power Generation appointed Mott MacDonald to provide technical and management oversight for a new tunnel to direct water around Niagara Falls and into the generators of the Sir Adam Beck power station. The tunnel was constructed with the world’s largest hard-rock tunnel boring machine.
