Environmental leadership in North America
Since the promulgation of comprehensive environmental legislation and regulations in the US and Canada, we have maintained a proactive approach to the evaluation and resolution of environmental issues on behalf of our clients. Our comprehensive environmental services offerings extend to indoor and outdoor environments and include all media, including advanced Visualization capabilities.
Working as a strong client advocate, we have completed all phases of environmental site assessment, investigation, remedial measure development, and implementation. We have undertaken solid waste and recyclables management planning studies and facilities permitting, design, and construction management. We have been advising our clients on storage tank management issues for over 20 years.
Mott MacDonald supports the development of new facilities by conducting predesign surveys, identifying environmentally sensitive areas such as wetlands and other protected habitats, guiding our clients through the regulatory maze of requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and other applicable regulations, and preparing sustainable, context-sensitive designs.
In addition, we routinely support our clients’ day-to-day operations with environmental monitoring activities, using state-of-the-art field equipment under the auspices of our stringent health and safety programs.
Planning, design, and construction
Our global team offers unrivaled experience in natural resource development, infrastructure, and the built environment. We help our clients throughout the project cycle, from planning through design, permitting, operation and management. Our environmental staff has worked with our own, our clients', and other consultants’ planning and design teams for major projects. such as Crossrail and the A3 Hindhead Tunnel in the UK, the Ngong Ping 360 cable car project in Hong Kong, and a regional power transmission line in Mozambique.
We've developed tools and methodologies that help us assess and mitigate potential risks while identifying opportunities for environmental improvement.
We help our clients engage with local communities and other stakeholders. Our social impact assessments, including consultation and resettlement planning, for two geothermal power projects in Indonesia are publicly recognized by the World Bank as exemplars of best practice.
Environmental management
We work in support of ongoing construction, maintenance, and operations work for major organizations. For National Grid, we provide long-term environmental support for its grid upgrade program across England and Wales, particularly ecological survey and protection surveys during transmission line works.
We support our clients as they develop their own strategies for environmental management. For Thales GB, we assessed the environmental risks at all its UK sites following a company restructure, prioritizing issues for action and assisting with implementation to eliminate risks from contaminated land in particular. We followed this by guiding Thales through development of its first corporate environmental policy and an environmental management system. In Abu Dhabi we helped Sorouh, a major development, publish its first corporate sustainability report.
Conservation and restoration
Independent of specific development projects, clients call on our international experts to assist with environmental survey, conservation, and restoration projects. The European Commission appointed us to undertake a project to restore and encourage sustainable integrated land use of the Eurasian Steppe in Moldova, Ukraine, and the Russian Federation, an important ecosystem under threat. WWF also commissioned us to review a species and habitat management action strategy for the snow leopard in Siberia and Mongolia, and its primary prey, such as the rare argali mountain sheep.
Sustainable development
Our concern for sustainable development goes back to our work on sustainable irrigated agriculture in Pakistan in the 1950s. The current focus on climate change is only one aspect that we take account of in project planning, as demonstrated by our designs for Masdar City.
Our INDUS methodology helps clients recognize the respective importance of environmental protection, natural resource management, sustainable communities, and economic criteria in planning and decision making. Mott MacDonald is a leader in providing renewable energy services to mitigate climate change risks, and in building communities to become resilient to climate change.
