Waste management in North America

Municipalities, counties, utility authorities, and private companies in North America rely on Mott MacDonald to help them implement an integrated approach to solid waste management and recycling. We draw on in-house capabilities to carry a project from the planning stages through to “turning the key” on new facilities.

Mott MacDonald's expertise ranges from collection and transportation systems to transfer stations, materials recovery (recycling) facilities, composting facilities, waste-to-energy plants, and landfills.

We specialize in the beneficial reuse and redevelopment of old landfills. Our signature projects include the redevelopment of landfill sites into multisport facilities (ice rinks, basketball arenas, swimming pools) community centers, and golf courses.

Sustainability is a key component of our company's design philosophy. For example, the Southern Ocean Landfill Closure in New Jersey utilized recycled glass for the drainage and venting layers, compost from the county facility for the vegetative layer, and a geomembrane containing 10% recycled material.

Master planning

We’ve developed waste master plans and strategies for countries as diverse as Dubai and Hong Kong, and have been involved in preparation of regional waste management strategies in the UK, the Czech Republic, and Poland. Our roles have included technical advice, procurement, environmental permitting, management, and business planning.

We offer a broad range of waste management planning services. With a full suite of analytical tools – financial, risk, waste flow, GIS, and process simulation – our waste management specialists give clients practical business and operational solutions. Engineering

We are familiar with the technical processes involved in waste collection and disposal, including incineration, composting, landfill, and energy from waste. Our technical experts can advise you on the disposal method that best suits your business and environment and help you implement this.

Our incineration expertise includes municipal and sewage sludge incineration in the UK, Russia and Hong Kong, where we have been involved in some of the world’s largest plants.

We have sound technical experience of landfill engineering, design, monitoring and remediation, including projects in Hong Kong, UK, Macedonia, and Uganda. In the UK, our experts have helped train staff from the Environment Agency and local government in the UK on landfill groundwater and leachate monitoring best practice.

Energy from waste

Our skills and experience in both the waste and energy sectors mean we're fully equipped to help clients deliver energy-from-waste developments. We have undertaken technical advisor roles for local authorities on projects involving energy from waste technology. Working closely with the Group’s team of power specialists, we undertake waste procurement, technical due diligence and independent certifier services.
