Urban development

More than half of the world’s population now live in cities and urbanisation is advancing rapidly. The infrastructure of those cities has not kept pace with demand and nearly one billion people live in slums – a figure which is expected to double by 2030.

Informal settlement in South Africa

Urbanisation is driven by population growth and the search for economic and social opportunity, as well as the need to escape natural and geo-political disasters.

By strengthening climate resilience and economic opportunity in rural communities and towns, we help countries to mitigate the population shift to the cities.

We can make cities more habitable by ensuring the basics are in place: supply of water, food and energy. We then help develop supporting services such as transport, telecoms, health and education. Finally, we can help cities become self-sustaining through improving capacity and governance.

We support national, regional and local governments to tackle the challenges of urban development drawing on our expertise in:

  • Sustainable economic growth
  • Masterplanning and infrastructure
  • Governance and capacity building
  • Resilient cities
  • Informal settlements Social infrastructure
  • Land use and physical planning
  • Transport for cities

How we've added value:

Creating jobs in Mozambique

In Mozambique, we are brokering linkages between employers and non-state training providers to overcome the mismatch between supply and demand of labour – aiming to create 3000 more jobs in the country by 2021.

Supplying safe water in Dhaka

In Bangladesh, we are overseeing the design and construction of a new river water intake, an approximately 24km raw water pipeline, and a water treatment plant which will be capable of delivering 500 million litres a day – providing a sustainable source of water for three million people.

Investing in schools in Colombia

In Colombia, we are supporting the construction and operation of more than 60 schools through four distinct PPP transactions. The new schools will address the shortage of pupil places by providing additional classrooms with a working and learning environment that is conducive to pupil and staff development.
