Due to Mott MacDonald’s recent award of the South Wales Metro scheme and NPS frameworks an exciting opportunity has emerged for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer within the Mott MacDonald’s Cardiff team.

Due to strong demand for our services we are seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing Cardiff Geotechnical Team and be a central part in the delivery of key projects to our clients.

The Cardiff office is known for the diverse portfolio of projects we undertake. It is situated just moments from centre of Cardiff and Queen Street station. Working in this office you will have the opportunity to work on geotechnical projects directly and provide technical support to our water, environmental, power, buildings, rail, bridges and highways design teams. With our project portfolio being diverse there is the opportunity to work on schemes ranging from Dams and nuclear power stations to flood alleviation schemes, highways and transportation schemes and building projects. This diverse workload is not restricted to projects solely based in the UK and as one would expect from a multinational company there are often opportunities to support projects overseas.

Job Description

With strong technical knowledge and significant experience in geotechnical projects, we seek a person who is both technically focussed but able to be client minded with great all-round skills in presentation and communication.

As part of the wider Geotechnical team you will assist in mentoring junior staff and generally work with other teams in Cardiff and in other UK offices providing internal support services related to foundations, retaining structures, slopes and road projects etc.

Where required you will prepare specifications and reports and carry out site inspections.
Attend client meetings and manage the client interface on progressively larger and more complex projects.

Other key duties will include:

• Scope and price geotechnical aspects of projects.
• Work with external and internal clients as a member of the geotechnical team.
• Advise internal professionals in our highways, bridges and structural engineering groups.
• Assist as a team member or lead geotechnical related projects.
• Apply your understanding of construction methods.
• Preparation of reports and specifications.
• Site inspections and reporting.
• Field monitoring and data collection.
• Mentoring of junior members of staff.

Candidate Specification

For this role you will require:

• Degree Qualified in Geology or Civil Engineering.
• Higher degree or specialist expertise highly regarded.
• Chartered Civil Engineer or Geologist status considered essential although strong candidates working towards chartership may also be considered.
• Experience in ground characterisation.
• Experience in design.
• Experience of project management.
• Appreciation of engineering risk.
• Developing and understanding of commercial risk.
• Prepared to innovate.
• An ability to mentor and foster skills within junior members of staff.
• Ongoing development of professional skills.
