CFD Modeller

Job Profile

Mott MacDonald are world leaders in the design, development and delivery of underground transportation schemes both in the UK and overseas. This includes metros systems, rail and road tunnels.

We are currently looking for a CFD modeller to join our team based in Croydon. This team conduct CFD studies for a range of applications such as fire and smoke spread in buildings and tunnels, ventilation and heating of facilities, wind engineering and hydraulic modelling of water utility installations. We also provide fluid dynamics and heat transfer advice and support to other teams within the business.

Job Description

You will be required to act as technical lead on tasks and projects, delivering appropriate CFD, fluid mechanics and engineering analyses, solutions, advice and strategies, as well as liaising with project stakeholders to achieve approvals. It is expected that you will carry out CFD modelling and simulations yourself, as well as help coach and support junior members of the team.

You will be required to manage projects and work streams effectively, ensuring that our work is delivered to high quality and best practice standards, budgets and programme time scales. Frequently, projects will require close leasing with technical teams in other technical areas such as mechanical engineering design, fire engineering, water and wind engineering, which are often widespread geographically.

As part of the role you will develop relationships with key clients and continue to promote Mott MacDonald effectively and the services we offer to internal and external clients, including involvement in business development activities.

You will be encouraged to develop your capabilities with a view to undertaking roles of increasing responsibility in terms of technical problem solving, mentoring and coaching of junior team members, task management and business development.

Candidate Specification

Essential academic, professional qualifications and experience of the candidate:

Ideally you have a good first degree in Mechanical Engineering with specialisation in related CFD topics.

It is required that you have hands-on expertise in CFD modelling techniques in an engineering consultancy or design environment – and can demonstrate a strong track record of this.

Advanced level use and expertise of general purpose CFD codes such as CFX, Fluent or Star-CCM+ and other associated software tools on industrial type projects is essential.

Advanced level use of specialist fire software FDS would be desirable.

Familiarity with at least two of our key application areas (ventilation, fire, wind or water engineering) would be desirable.

As well as having good technical, communication and coaching skills, you should be experienced in liaising with project stakeholders and be able to run projects and manage junior staff.

Essential competencies / skills:
  • Track record of hand-on expertise of CFD modelling and applications in challenging consulting or industrial design environments, demonstrating complex problem solving and meeting stringent client needs, budgets and time-scales
  • Advanced level use and expertise of general purpose CFD codes such as CFX, Fluent or Star-CCM+
  • Advanced level use and expertise with user routines involving for example C++, Python, Java, Fortran etc.
  • Advanced level use of Macro & Scripts in industrial type engineering problem solving

Desirable academic, professional qualifications, and experience:

  • PhD in relevant CFD area
  • Chartered Engineer status

Desirable competencies / skills:

  • Linux
  • Advanced use of FDS CFD software
