Team Leader - Tackling Deadly Diseases in Africa

Job Profile

Mott MacDonald is seeking applicants for the role of Team Leader on the Tackling Deadly Diseases in Africa Programme (TDDAP), funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). TDDAP aims to save lives and reduce the impact of disease outbreaks and epidemics on African populations, building on lessons learnt from the Ebola crisis, and subsequent Zika and Yellow Fever epidemics.

TDDAP will aim to strengthen African health systems and institutions, by supporting:
(i) World Health Organisation Africa Office (WHO AFRO) reform
(ii) Countries’ ability to achieve the International Health Regulations (IHRs) based on assessment and prioritisation,
(iii) Better governance and accountability of public health systems
(iv) Improved data and evidence for decision making
(v) A contingency mechanism should a pre-crisis situation arise.
The six countries to be covered will be from the following: Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire, Burundi, Cameroon and two countries from the following: Niger, Central Africa Republic, Chad, Mauritania and Mali, to demonstrate a regional and cross-border approach.

Job Description

The Team Leader will be responsible for management, technical leadership, administrative oversight, and overall coordination of the activity. S/he will serve as principal institutional liaison with DFID, WHO and other key stakeholders. S/he will manage staff and ensure the programme meets stated goals and reporting requirements, as well as ensure the quality, timeliness, and efficiency of all products and activities generated under the programme.

Candidate Specification

  • Master’s degree in Public Health / Epidemiology / related field
  • At least 10 years of managerial experience of public health programs with a demonstrated track record leading large, complex programs to successful outcomes
  • Previous experience as a Team Leader, preferably on a DFID-funded project
  • Experience in health systems strengthening, epidemiology, disease surveillance, and communicable diseases.
  • Knowledge of global health security agendas, One Health and International Health Regulations is preferred.
  • Extensive experience with stakeholder engagement, including international donors and local government, and the ability to develop partnerships with local government, private sector, and the wider international community
  • Strong experience in capacity building and institutional strengthening
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with DFID tools and methodologies to strengthen health systems
  • Knowledge of the health sector predominantly in Francophone Africa, particularly in the following countries: Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire, Burundi, Cameroon, Niger, Central Africa Republic, Chad, Mauritania and Mali
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French required.
