Transport
The proposed Auckland City Rail Link (CRL) is considered to be the most significant improvement to Auckland’s transport network since the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. We are providing station design, fire and life safety, operations, rail systems, and pedestrian modeling to this public transport system supporting Auckland’s population and economic growth.
Also in Auckland we were technical advisor for the $4-5 billion Additional Waitemata Harbour Crossing. We undertook a feasibility study and option assessment for a combined road and rail tunnel crossing the harbor.
Buildings
Mott MacDonald is providing structural and facade design and buildings services technical advice for the $35 million Carlaw Park postgraduate student accommodation. After developing a number of options we selected a cost-effective hybrid structural steel and precast concrete floor solution that provided both structural savings and savings through improved space planning for the apartment and car park layouts.
We're also working on a number of projects at the University of Auckland, including the new Science Centre 302 building. We are providing building envelope performance modeling and facade design. Our analysis has assisted with savings of $1.4 million on the facade as well as enhancing energy efficiency by reducing the required cooling and heating capacity.
We also provided facade engineering for 45 Queen Street office tower, and New Lynn Merchant Quarter, Auckland, as well as Burwood Hospital in Christchurch.
Maritime
Mott MacDonald has been providing specialist maritime advice to Auckland Transport on the new ferry terminal at Quay Street, and provision of operational and patronage input into the master plan.
This commission is developing and our expertise will be used to provide best practice techniques to the future terminal, ensuring that it links successfully to the city as well as other proposed developments in the area.
We will also test operator requirements for the terminal, which will assist in determining the required alignment of the new quay wall. The completion of this project involves an intimate understanding of the wider context including existing and future adjacent spaces and activities.
Water
With the addition of specialist water technology and consulting company AWT, headquartered in Auckland, we offer leading-edge technical solutions across the project cycle and covering all aspects of collection, conveyance, treatment, reuse, and residuals incorporating water, wastewater, and stormwater. Core services include network monitoring, project planning and management, modeling, design, commissioning, and optimization.
AWT recently supported the expansion of the Rotorua treatment plant and applied membrane bioreactor technology to meet New Zealand’s tightest nutrient limits from a wastewater discharge. AWT has also implemented a new $14 million membrane water treatment plant for Taupo to remove arsenic from the source water. AWT has developed the H2knOw-how middleware data management platform, which is being used by water utilities across the region. In Christchurch City it has been adopted to provide network monitoring data and analysis to assist with rebuilding underground water assets.
