We are delivering a specialist university project, The Centre for Arabic Studies, on which we're undertaking engineering design and acting as the local architect and engineer of record with the local authorities and stakeholders.

We also designed a fully air-conditioned carbon-neutral showcase demonstration stadium that was pivotal to Qatar’s success in winning the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is self-sufficient in renewable energy and carbon-neutral in operation.

With Ras Laffan Industry City being developed as one of the world’s largest industrial complexes, we were asked to identify and assess options providing secure and efficient access to and around the land and port. Our study was to deliver solutions allowing a high level of security screening of people and vehicles, while accommodating around 100,000 construction workers.

Transport

We undertook detailed design and supervised construction of the Terminal Metro station at Doha International Airport, which links the new airport to Doha city.

This work has helped lead to us becoming involved at the start of the launch of the Doha Metro Project, where we are the contractor's designer for the major stations at Msheireb and Education City.

Power

We are proud of our ongoing delivery to the power sector. We are one of a limited number of consultants approved to work on the Kahramaa high-voltage distribution network and are about to start on Phase XI of the Qatar transmission and distribution expansion program.

We were owner's engineer, providing project management and design review, for the delivery of power networks in Doha's West Bay commercial district, consisting of cable networks and architecturally striking substations.

We acted as owner’s engineer to implement the Ras Laffan Power and Desalination Plant, which has helped meet projected power and water demand increases in the country. Our responsibilities covered design review, construction supervision, inspection, testing, and commissioning.

We provided advisory and management services to the 1000-megawatt Qatalum combined-cycle power plant, which will provide a steady supply of electricity to the Qatalum aluminum smelter under development in Mesaieed.

We have also worked as owner’s engineer for the $425 million (£340 million) Ras Abu Fontas B2 plant, an extension to the existing facility near Doha. Our role involved design review and construction monitoring, warranty management, tender evaluation, and award of the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contact.

Oil and gas

In Ras Laffan Industrial City we undertook the design of topside facilities of a new jetty for export of liquid gas products from Qatar Shell’s Pearl gas to-liquid plant. Output is equivalent to around 140,000 barrels of oil per day. Our designs saved cost and time, and enhanced safety. Ten million man-hours were worked without a lost time incident.

Qatar Petroleum and its EPC contractor Punj Lloyd awarded Mott MacDonald the engineering role for one of the most prestigious projects in Qatar: the Strategic Gas Transmission Project.

The objective of this project was to maintain uninterrupted flow of sweet lean gas to power stations and some of the critical consumers in Mesaieed, Ras Abu Aboud, and Umm Bab/Dukhan. The complexity of the project required tremendous teamwork. A special commendation award presented by Qatar Petroleum recognized our performance on the front-end engineering design.

Since 1974, Mott MacDonald has played an integral role in aiding the delivery of distinguished development in Qatar. In our early days we were at the forefront of developing the Qatar power and water sector with iconic projects at Ras Abu Fontas.
