Our business in North America is thriving. With over 2,300 staff in 62 US and Canadian cities, Mott MacDonald is delivering pivotal projects in the transport, water, oil and gas sectors, plus projects in education, power, buildings, and infrastructure finance.

We've developed and refined a system for US educator evaluation using staff and student surveys. In 2012, over 250,000 surveys were carried out by students across the country, identifying what makes the best teachers effective, enabling others to learn from them.

Oil and gas

For the Southeast Market Expansion project, undertaken for Boardwalk/Gulf South Pipeline, we provided project management, engineering design, surveys, mapping, right-of-way acquisition, environmental support, and construction bid packages for 70 miles (113 kilometers) of pipeline between central Mississippi and the Gulf Coast.

We provided similar services to Spectra Energy to provide 60 miles (97 kilometers) of pipeline and metering facilities to move natural gas across Pennsylvania, supplementing their existing pipeline system.


Our education experts at Cambridge Education worked with Springfield Public Schools to provide 130 administrators and district staff with training to meet the new Massachusetts Educator Evaluator Rubric and supporting the design and implementation of a curriculum alignment plan. The District is now able to provide more targeted professional development customized to the requirements of individuals.

For Hillsborough County Public Schools, we helped implement the Empowering Effective Teachers initiative, requiring that teachers are observed by administrators, peer evaluators, and mentors. In 2013, we collected and analyzed over 2,500 lesson observation scores, with the resulting analysis being used by the county to help inform its decision making.

Through a partnership with Dr Ronald Ferguson of Harvard University, Cambridge Education delivered The Tripod Project,® a system for US educator evaluation using staff and student surveys. These surveys have been an integral part of the Gates-funded Measures of Effective Teaching project, which is improving results in English and mathematics.

Highways and bridges

We are providing program and design management for the Alaskan Way viaduct and seawall replacement program. A 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) bored tunnel for a two-level stacked roadway will replace the viaduct along the existing SR-99 corridor.

For the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel in New York City, we provided construction administration and inspection services for the replacement of equipment including switchgear and electrical feeders at the four tunnel ventilation buildings. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, we are designing replacements for all electrical, mechanical, structural, and communications equipment.

We are providing program management and monitoring design and construction for the new $6 billion, 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) San Francisco-Oakland Bay self-anchored suspension bridge. A range of technical, logistical, and procurement proposals shaved $400 million off the projected delivery cost.



We are subconsultant and program manager for the downtown rail extension of the $4.2 billion Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco. The transit center will house nine bus and rail systems in one facility, making it the largest of its kind west of New York City.

We were awarded project management, preliminary design, environmental engineering, permitting, and right-of-way acquisition services contracts for three segments of the California High Speed Rail system. Spanning 800 miles (1,287 kilometers) from San Francisco and Sacramento in the north to San Diego in the south, and operating at speeds up to 220 mph, it is projected to transport 100 million passengers per year by 2030.

As lead consultant for the Crenshaw/LAX transit corridor, we are providing engineering services in support of the environmental clearance and development of the design-build delivery. The corridor extends 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometers) including at-grade running sections, aerial alignment, underground cut and cover segments, tunnel segments, underground stations, and one aerial station.

We've been providing program and construction management for America’s largest infrastructure project, the $7.3 billion East Side Access project in New York City, connecting the Long Island Rail Road line into Grand Central Station.

Conditions range from soft ground in Queens to hard rock under Manhattan, requiring a huge variety of tunneling techniques. With many contracts progressing simultaneously in complex and challenging conditions, our industry-leading technical expertise and experience of delivering some of the world’s toughest tunneling projects is being used to keep East Side Access on track.



We implemented the sustainable airport planning, design, and construction guidelines for the Midfield Satellite Concourse expansion at Los Angeles International Airport, which forms part of a $5 billion modernization program.

In 2012, Airbus made the decision to become the first new manufacturer of large commercial aircraft in the US in more than 40 years. We were selected to provide program management services for the design and construction of the Airbus Final Assembly Line, in association with Hoar Program Management. The plant, located at Brookley Aeroplex in Mobile, Alabama, will assemble and deliver planes in the Airbus A320 Family of single-aisle jetliners.



We have a strong track record spanning three decades in the power engineering industry, covering thermal and renewable generation as well as transmission and distribution. At Brayton Point power plant we helped deliver the first US cooling towers to be built in 15 years, 25% ahead of schedule and 20% under budget.

We undertook detailed engineering and design for a 800-megawatt gas-fired simple-cycle power plant in Palm Desert, California, and are providing owners’ engineering for the 725-megawatt CPV Woodbridge Energy Center in New Jersey.



In Washington DC we are providing program management in support of DC Water's ongoing $350 million 10-year water system capital improvement program. Having implemented the water system geographic information system, the team is now helping develop an integrated water distribution and sewer collection system.

Our water team provided engineering services to Aqua Pennsylvania on the upgrade of the 16 million gallons per day (61 million liters per day) Neshaminy Water Treatment Plant: one of the first major water treatment plant projects fully executed using building information modeling.
