On National Hire a Veteran Day, we recognize the immense value veterans bring to the civilian workforce and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their transition from military service to careers within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. At Mott MacDonald, this commitment goes beyond words – it's a lived experience, led by those who’ve walked the path themselves.
One of our team members, Coryanna DeGannes, is a veteran whose military background has deeply influenced her approach to talent acquisition and community building within the organization. Now playing a key role in Mott MacDonald’s recruitment efforts, Coryanna brings a unique perspective to how our talent acquisition team in North America attracts, supports, and empowers veteran talent across the industry.
We’ve asked Coryanna a few questions about her experience being a veteran at Mott MacDonald, and how her military background continues to shape her work and leadership.
My military experience deeply shaped how I view talent. Having gone through the transition to civilian life myself, I understand how difficult it can be to translate military skills into a corporate context. This insight allows me to help the talent acquisition team and hiring managers understand where military experience is aligned in the business and recognize potential in candidates, whether it’s unconventional work experience, diverse educational backgrounds, or specialized capabilities.
The DoD SkillBridge program offers active-duty service members the opportunity to gain hands-on civilian work experience through targeted industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during their final 180 days of service. It’s designed to connect transitioning service members with industry partners for meaningful, real-world job opportunities.
Mott MacDonald’s recruitment team is a strong advocate of the SkillBridge program. We collaborate closely with our teams across the company to identify roles where participants can contribute meaningfully and grow professionally. It’s a great way for us to build relationships with talented individuals and help them find a path forward with us.
Veterans bring many strengths such as leadership, problem-solving under pressure, and a strong sense of accountability. In our industry, where projects are complex and timelines are tight, those qualities are incredibly valuable. At Mott MacDonald, we actively recognize and support these strengths by offering meaningful project opportunities, mentorship, and fostering a culture that values military experience.
The committee is really the core of our veteran community here at Mott MacDonald. It’s a space where veterans and active service members can connect, share experiences, and support one another. We also work on initiatives that celebrate service and ensure veterans at the company feel seen and supported.
Yes, one of the most meaningful success stories I can share is actually my own. I joined Mott MacDonald through the DoD SkillBridge program, making a complete career pivot from the military into talent acquisition. It was a big transition, but I quickly discovered a passion for recruiting and helping others navigate their own career journeys. Now two years later, I’m a full-time recruiter, continuing to grow and gain experience every day. My journey is a testament to the power of veteran hiring programs and the value veterans bring when given the opportunity to thrive in a new environment.
