About the business unit  
Mott MacDonald’s Advisory and Programme Delivery (APD) unit delivers both project, programme & commercial management (PPCM) services and advisory solutions across the built environment, defence, energy, water, environmental, transportation, health and care sectors.  

 

We deliver tailored solutions that directly address our clients’ key challenges, combining our world-leading project expertise with unrivalled programme delivery capabilities and advisory services. 

 

APD delivers services to projects ranging in scale and complexity up to £20bn, through the technical disciplines of programme management, project management, project controls, scheduling, cost management, estimating, infrastructure finance, management consulting, digital consulting and education, health and care management.   

 


Overview of the role
As an Assistant Project Manager, you will be a motivated and detail-oriented individual to support the delivery of environment and water infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will have an awareness of NEC contracts and a strong understanding of project lifecycle management within regulated sectors.

 

This role offers the opportunity to work on high-impact projects that enhance the environment, water quality, promote sustainability, and improve community resilience to environmental challenges, such as climate change and flood risk management.

 

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Assist in the planning, execution, and monitoring of water and environment projects under NEC3/NEC4 contracts
  • Support the Project Manager or Senior Project Manager in managing scope, budget, schedule, and risk across multiple workstreams
  • Coordinate with stakeholders including clients, contractors, consultants, and regulatory bodies
  • Prepare and maintain project documentation including programmes, risk registers, early warnings, and compensation event records
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, health & safety standards, and contract obligations
  • Attend site visits, progress meetings, and contribute to quality assurance and performance reviews
  • Assist in procurement activities and contract administration in line with NEC principles

 


Candidate specification
Essential:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Project Management, or related discipline
  • 3+ years of experience in project delivery within the water or environmental sector
  • Awareness of NEC3 or NEC4 contracts (ECC, PSC, or TSC)
  • Actively working towards MAPM, ChPP, MCIWEM, MICE, MCIOB, MRICS etc
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • Project management experience across a range of high risk / high complexity / high value projects and programmes with a strong focus on internal and external stakeholder management and complex risk management
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations
  • Ability to work a minimum of 2 days per week in the nominated office
  • Able to foster and promote collaborative working, have a can-do attitude and a willingness to learn and develop

 

Desirable:

  • Working experience of NEC PSC and ECC
  • Experience across the full project lifecycle
  • Experience working in the environment and water sector
