About the business unit

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Strategic Enterprise Architecture Lead to develop and maintain our enterprise architecture framework, driving efficiencies and increasing business value across our digital estate. This role will shape architectural patterns that optimise our use of enterprise information and software assets in the age of AI, supporting safe innovation, agility, and long-term evolution.
As a strategic advisor reporting to the Head of AI & Information Management, you will influence and collaborate with executives, technical leaders, Group Heads of Function, and digital innovation specialists, including the Chief Digital Officer, Head of IT, Head of Enterprise PMO, Head of Application Development, and other function leaders. You will connect, coordinate, and clarify architectural responsibilities across the enterprise, build alignment, and create future-ready capabilities.
This is a newly created, pivotal role, responsible for maximising operational efficiency, enabling scaled innovation, supporting continuous improvement, and realising business value from digital investments.
Key Relationships
Reports to: Head of AI & Information Management
Interfaces: Chief Digital Officer, Head of IT, Head of Enterprise PMO, Head of Application Development, Business Leaders, Group Heads of Function, other Architects, regional digital teams.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Enablement
- Translate business priorities, including AI adoption, information delivery, and efficiency improvement into actionable enterprise architecture guidance and roadmaps. Develop an evolving architecture strategy that empowers the organisation for the future and drives lasting value.
- Facilitate alignment between business, IT, and digital functions to deliver integrated, business-driven solutions. Advise executive and PMO leadership to support technology planning, mid- to long-term strategic investment, and help build the case for change in major initiatives.
- Recommend solutions and approaches that foster rapid, informed, and efficient client outcomes while reducing operational risk.
Collaboration, Mapping & Capability Building
- Drive the mapping of the enterprise architecture landscape to identify opportunities for synergy, eliminate inefficiencies, close capability gaps, and remove barriers to optimal delivery.
- Create and maintain strategic architecture roadmaps, ensuring that enterprise requirements are traceable from design to delivery.
- Build strong relationships across existing architect roles, Group Heads of Function, and PMO teams, fostering forums and working groups for shared challenges and solutions.
- Champion architectural practices that simplify, integrate, and future-proof our technology, information, and software environments across all domains.
- Build and mentor a high-performance architect team, encouraging best practices and developing internal capabilities for both business and technical architecture functions.
Governance, Communication & Risk
- Partner with the Digital Governance Lead to establish architecture principles, standards, and governance mechanisms that promote efficiency, value, and compliance.
- Oversee and maintain architecture repositories, reference models, and patterns. Facilitate architectural governance forums and strategic decision processes.
- Support the education and upskilling of technical and non-technical stakeholders, promoting a culture of continuous improvement, tangible impacts and architectural excellence.
- Ensure architectural decisions support enterprise security, data protection, compliance requirements, and ethical data/AI practices.
Data, AI, and Technology Adoption
- Champion the integration of Data and AI as foundational capabilities across business, application, and technology domains.
- Collaborate with data engineering, analytics, and AI teams to embed scalable, secure, and ethical data and AI practices.
- Proactively evaluate emerging technologies, with a focus on platforms such as Microsoft, SAP, and other strategic partner solutions. Bring experience and insight to large-scale ERP/digital transformation projects, leveraging industry best practices where required.
Skills & Experience
- Significant experience in enterprise architecture, digital strategy, or related roles within large, complex organisations (preferably AEC, consultancy, or similar sectors).
- Track record of working collaboratively across matrixed teams and functions to map, align, and optimise enterprise architecture, information, and business processes.
- Proven ability to translate business needs, especially around information, software, and AI, into powerful architectural outcomes.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, experience in supporting cross-functional teams, and influencing decision-making.
- Experience building and leading architecture teams or communities of practice.
- In-depth knowledge of architecture frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman, etc.), digital governance, Agile, DevOps, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Appreciation for pragmatic problem-solving, innovative thinking, and operational efficiency, demonstrating the impact of Enterprise Architecture.
- Experience with technology partners such as Microsoft, SAP, and other major enterprise vendors is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with enterprise security, data protection, and compliance.
