Mott MacDonald is seeking a Highway Engineer to work onsite at one of our large transportation clients in the Bay Area. This position will be on-site in San Jose, CA.  However, you will also be supporting projects throughout Northern California.

As a Highway Engineer, you will be supporting Project Managers on various project engineering and project management duties on highway and/or roadway projects. Phases of projects for which management will be required include feasibility analyses; conceptual, environmental clearance, preliminary and detailed design; cost estimating; construction and contract management. More specifically, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Support Project Managers in coordinating and working with technical and management groups in the delivery of a range of transportation projects, including express lane projects, freeway interchange improvements, active transportation improvements and other transportation improvement projects.
  • Review design consultants’ submittals such as project deliverables, schedule, reports, cost estimates, plans/exhibits, invoices, etc.
  • Develop independent cost estimates
  • Prepare presentations and status reports, to track critical project activities, and review staffing plans.
  • Participate in Project Development Team (PDT) meetings, including review of monthly meeting addenda, meeting minutes, and meeting material on the Project managers’ behalf.
  • Actively participate in and support internal and external development and training activities.
  • Support Project Managers by coordinating with Project sponsors and/or stakeholders, including, but not limited to, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), FHWA, county, and cities.
  • Support Project Managers by working with Resident Engineer, Office Engineer, and Structural Representative, and provide design support during the construction of the projects. 
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing Project Study Reports (PSRs), Project Reports (PRs), and environmental technical documents.
  • Support quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reviews and maintain design standards compliance per Caltrans manuals.
  • Assist with project scheduling, risk register updates, and budget tracking to help maintain scope, schedule, and cost objectives.
  • Support preparation of project funding applications, cooperative agreements, and technical exhibits for project approvals and allocations.
  • Assist the PM in coordinating reviews with Caltrans and other agencies, ensuring timely resolution of design comments.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering or related field required.
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in design, project/program management, construction administration, and project coordination.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred
  • Candidate to be technically capable in highway design development, familiar with Caltrans project development procedures/processes, with experience in the development of managed lanes, specifically Express Lanes.
  • Knowledge of geometric design principles, drainage design, traffic control, and utility coordination.
  • Ability to prepare and review technical reports, cost estimates, and quantities.
  • Able to design conceptual drawings using AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Demonstrated interest in the development and maintenance of client relations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required, and working as a team player is very important for this role.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Desire to work with multiple agencies to develop projects in a collaborative fashion

The expected salary for this position is $94,000- $114,000

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
