We are looking for a talented, motivated, and experienced Principal Geotechnical Engineer to support our Canadian Geotechnical Group in Toronto. 

 

In this position as the Engineer of Record (EOR), you will lead and supervise geotechnical engineers on interdisciplinary project teams to design, build and maintain largescale infrastructure across North America. Your expertise in soil-structure interaction, foundation engineering, ground improvement, and geotechnical risk assessment will support the delivery of major transportation, bridge, and heavy civil engineering projects.  
 

 
 
As a Principal Geotechnical Engineer, your responsibilities would include:   

  • Leading the design and delivery of a wide range of geotechnical projects from pursuit, planning through design and construction.   

  • Performing technical analysis, calculation and design for shallow and deep foundations, ground improvement, retaining walls, slope stability, seismic and seepage studies. 

  • Collaboration with multidiscipline professionals, as well as clients, and third parties, as required.  

  • Authoring technical memos and reports and specifications to communicate your work. 

  • Supervising, coordinating and reviewing the work of other geotechnical engineers including technical reports, engineering drawings, cost estimates, specifications, contract documents, and technical support during construction. 

  • Overseeing the planning and management of projects to ensure that work is fit for purpose, completed on schedule and within budget.  

  • Providing project management and technical oversight including mentoring team members and setting high standards for professionalism and quality. 

  • Working with new and existing clients to identify opportunities and develop new business as part of our ongoing growth strategy. 

  • Lead proposal efforts and compile geotechnical proposals for a variety of infrastructure projects. 

  • Lead design teams, plan and manage resources to deliver assignments within the required schedules and assigned budgets. 

  • Participation and engagement with the geotechnical community in Ontario (specifically the GTHA).  

  • Demonstrating a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous learning in a collaborative team environment.  

 

The right candidate is a versatile and detailed thinker who can lead teams of engineers to provide practical solutions to complex problems.  


The candidate must possess the following experience:  


  • A strong academic background, with a Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering (a Master’s degree would be considered an asset) 

  • 15+ years of geotechnical engineering and project management experience, with an emphasis on transportation, infrastructure, heavy civil and energy engineering structures.  

  • Registered Professional Engineer  in the province of Ontario is required. 

  • A thorough understanding and proven track record of infrastructure project delivery in the GTHA is required. Previous experience working with the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) at Pearson Airport would be considered an asset. 

  • Registry or experiences for application to be registered, in MTO’s Registry Appraisal and Qualifications System (RAQS) system for medium complexity geotechnical engineering and/or tunnelling categories is preferred.  

  • Detailed design and construction experience of a variety of deep foundation solutions (different forms of piling) and shallow foundations to support buildings and bridges. Experience of working closely with structural engineers to deliver foundation solutions, as well as earthquake engineering and performance-based design. 

  • Strong background providing geotechnical support for design of complex structures, as well as experience with the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, CSA Codes, National Building Code and Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. Experience with design-bid-build and alternative procurement models (e.g. P3, Design-Build).
