Commitment

Mott MacDonald protects the environment and makes a positive difference by delivering sustainable outcomes through our activities. This includes establishing actions, and making business decisions, that balance the climate, environment and social aspects of our business operations and projects.

As a global business we have responsibility for tackling the world’s biggest challenges. We are a signatory to the UN Global Compact; we uphold its Ten Principles. Our sustainability priorities are informed by assessment of the material relevance and strategic significance of climate, environment, and social aspects to our business operations and projects.

We do not participate or become complicit in human rights abuses, and we comply with applicable compliance obligations, and legal and regulatory requirements in every jurisdiction where we operate.

We are committed to delivering carbon reduction in line with our validated science-based targets, and achieving net-zero carbon emissions for our global business by 2040 with:

• an aim for 70% of suppliers by expenditure to have science-based targets by 2027
• an aim to reduce our scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 46% by 2030 and relevant¹ scope 3 emissions by 28% (from 2019 base year)
• a reduction in scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 90% by 2040 (from 2019 base year).

Approach

To fulfil our commitment, we:

• support the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• minimise resource and energy consumption, moving toward renewable/low carbon energy sources across our workplaces.
• identify, assess, and manage sustainability risks.
• make a positive difference in the communities where we operate, by considering opportunities to deliver social, economic, and environmental benefits throughout the projects’ lifecycle, and supporting community programming that reflects our purpose and values.
• work with suppliers who align with our sustainability policy.
• uphold a transparent and accountable approach to sustainability across our business operations and supply chains, with disclosures aligned to applicable requirements in the jurisdictions where we operate.
• equip our people with the information they need to make informed decisions by providing resources and building capabilities to address sustainability at the outset of projects
• work to continually improve our environmental management systems (EMS) and practices to meet the needs of our employees, clients, and business.

Our business management system meets the requirements of ISO14001 and is independently certified in appropriate geographical locations around the world.

Responsibility

• The chief governance officer is responsible for this policy and its implementation.
• Regional general managers are responsible for the effective implementation of this policy in their regions and business units.
• The Group EMS manager, Group carbon reduction manager and Group social responsibility manager are responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of this policy and embedding sustainability commitments into our operational requirements.
• Regional sustainability leads are responsible for working with the business to embed sustainability commitments into regional practices.
• Project managers are responsible and project principals accountable for incorporating appropriate sustainability solutions into their projects, in alignment with local legislation and client expectations.
• All members of our workforce are responsible for complying with this policy.
