About the Armed Forces Pathway
Mott MacDonald’s Armed Forces Pathway represents our commitment to recruiting, transitioning, developing, and supporting the armed forces community within our organisation. The Pathway is designed to support military personnel transitioning into civilian careers. It provides support and resources to help individuals develop relevant skills, and successfully integrate into roles outside of the military. Our programme offers training, mentorship, and network opportunities, tailored to the unique experiences and skills of military personnel.

 

Duration: 12 months 

 

Location: Newcastle / Glasgow/ Altrincham/ York/ Brighton/ Croydon

 

Programme: Participants will learn about project management within our Energy division. You will be supported to work on a variety of projects and empowered to develop your skills within a consultancy environment. 

 

Support: You’ll be paired with a supportive buddy from our Mott MacDonald Forces community.

 


About the business unit
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

 

 

Overview of the role
The Energy Networks team within our Energy unit is looking for a Project Manager to lead our projects in a growing portfolio, supporting our clients in the transition to decarbonisation in the UK and across Europe as part of the energy transition. As well as contributing to these new and existing projects, this position will play an active role in improving our project management processes and approach, driving both delivery excellence and efficiency in our business.

 

Key responsibilities and duties will include:

  • Delivering project scope to time quality and cost
  • Building and managing strong relationships with senior client representatives as well as internal stakeholders
  • Establishing effective communications across the whole project delivery team
  • Taking the lead on problem solving and decision making
  • Controlling internal and external commercial aspects of the project under the contract arrangements
  • Managing risk to the business and to the client
  • Work effectively on several projects concurrently to deliver to tight deadlines

 

This role will provide an excellent opportunity to further develop your career in a highly supportive and collaborative environment across the Energy sector and provide exposure to some exciting energy transition projects that will protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions There will be a specific emphasis on supporting and growing our project management capabilities and on developing initiatives to improve our service delivery.

 

Essential Criteria – Armed Forces Veteran Transitioning to Project Management

Relevant Qualifications or Equivalent Experience: A degree in engineering or project management is beneficial, but equivalent experience gained through military service—such as leading operations, managing logistics, or overseeing technical teams—is highly valued.

Strong Communication Skills: Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively across ranks and units, often in high-pressure environments.

Leadership and Project Oversight: Demonstrated experience in planning, executing, and managing complex missions or projects, including coordination of personnel, resources, and timelines.

Adaptability and Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, often in dynamic and fast-paced settings, with a focus on achieving mission-critical outcomes.

Team Collaboration: Skilled in working within diverse, cross-functional teams, fostering cooperation and cohesion among individuals from varied backgrounds and disciplines.

Change and Risk Management: Familiarity with structured approaches to managing change, assessing risks, and maintaining operational readiness—skills directly transferable to civilian project environments.

Decision-Making and Accountability: Comfortable making informed decisions under pressure, with a strong sense of responsibility and adherence to protocols and standards.

Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Focus: Commitment to creating and maintaining environments that prioritize safety, wellbeing, and operational integrity, aligned with military standards and practices.

Mobility and Flexibility: Willingness and ability to travel to different locations, including offices, operational sites, or overseas, as required .

  • Relevant PM qualifications (eg PMQ, Prince 2)
