About the business unit

The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across a number of energy sectors including thermal generation, hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations; to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

 

Overview of the role

As Principal Designer (Advisor) / CDM / Health & Safety specialist you will support, advise and assist a range of clients in carrying out their duties under CDM 2015 within the Energy Division of Mott MacDonald including on key frameworks and other energy projects. Additionally, you will assist in carrying out design and project safety reviews, ensuring the application of the principles of prevention and adherence to other Health & Safety legalisation. This is an opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and experience while being an integral part of world class design teams while working on a range of interesting and prestigious energy projects within the power generation and transmission sector.

 

Key responsibilities and duties include: 

Prepare and maintain project level CDM and BSA Compliance Strategies
Assist the Client in identifying and obtaining existing pre-construction information and manage such collation
Review existing information and identify areas where information is missing / required
Review and comment on designers’ hazard & risk information / support the project with management of the hazard registers
Maintain close links with designers and assist them in identifying and eliminating or controlling foreseeable risks to the health and safety of others.
Work closely with Project Managers to guide them with producing designs that are safe to build, operate and maintain
Assist in the preparation of the Health and Safety File

 

Candidate specification

Essential:

Relevant HNC / HND or  technical degree in a relevant technical subject such engineering, energy or construction
A recognised professional Health & Safety qualification such a NEBOSH Construction as a minimum but preferably higher such as NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ 4/5/6/7 or Degree in Health & Safety or ICE Health & Safety Registration
Chartership (or working towards) through a relevant organisation such as IET, CIOB, ICE, RICS, IOSH, CABE, RIBA or similar
A successful track record and high degree of understanding and knowledge for a range of clients on the application of the CDM Regulations to the energy and infrastructure projects, specifically as a Principal Designer (Advisor) and / or CDM Advisor
Good level of technical competence
Experience of high hazardous / high reliability working environments
Experience in the full project life cycle through detailed design and into construction and handover
Proactive with good organisational capability
Excellent client-facing and communication skills
Keen to work in a collaborative environment
Ability to be self-assured, contribute to and influence meetings
Experience of successfully working in a team
Ability to work to budgets and time constraints
Good technical writing skills
Ability to work with design teams to deliver large projects

 

Desirable:

Experience completing HSE inspections and audits
Experience of ISO 45001 and other integrated management systems
CSCS, Person or other similar competency cards
Understanding of BS5975:2024 and temporary works design in general
