Mott MacDonald is actively seeking a skilled and highly collaborative Senior Modeler with experience in VISSIM, Aimsun and/or other microsimulation environments to join our team in Canada. This is a unique opportunity to help deliver innovative policy and infrastructure solutions for both public and private sector clients and work with a diverse team of urban planners, engineers and other consultants and technical specialists. Our team is on the cutting edge of this field, combining transportation planning, engineering, and digital analytics to develop innovative solutions and help our clients make decisions that will shape Canadian cities in the future. You are the ideal candidate if you are recognized as having a strong technical background in modelling and analytics, have a strong interest in public transit and other sustainable transportation modes, and are a creative thinker who is excited to use models in innovative ways to find solutions to a range of problems.


In this role you will be responsible for leading microsimulation initiatives and building Mott MacDonald’s capacity and reputation for undertaking traffic and multi-modal modelling work in Canada, while also supporting clients in the United States and around the world. To do this you will work with staff from across Mott MacDonald’s global group of companies to apply transportation modelling approaches and undertake a wide range of technical analyses to support infrastructure and policy work.

 

You will build our capacity and reputation in multi-modal modelling using microscopic transportation simulation using VISSIM, Aimsun and other tools, econometric and statistical analysis, and data analytics. You will also collaborate with Mott MacDonald’s Digital Advisory team in North America, providing transportation expertise and analysis to projects which may include development of software tools, data analytics, program management and business case analysis.

 

Duties will include: 

 

  • Engaging with clients, stakeholders, and partners in transportation modelling including government and private sector organizations;
  • Leading modelling initiatives and guiding the application of models and analytical tools to aid in policy and infrastructure investment decisions;
  • Providing transportation modelling and analytical expertise to the design and delivery of infrastructure;
  • Creating and contributing to deliverables including proposals, reports, and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Designing modelling approaches for projects and liaising with Mott MacDonald’s global resources in modelling and analytics;
  • Guiding and mentoring junior and intermediate staff with an interest in modelling;
  • Applying knowledge of research, econometric, and statistical methods;
  • Undertaking various project management duties such as managing projects, client engagement, work planning, budget monitoring, and project controls reporting.

 

The ideal candidate will possess the following core competencies and experience:

 

  • Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering, Planning, Economics, Geography or similar, or bachelor’s degree with additional commensurate experience; 
  • 10+ years of previous professional experience that includes leading microscopic simulation initiatives;
  • Professional Engineer and/or Registered Professional Planner;
  • Must have a reputation for proficiency in Aimsun and one or more other microscopic simulation tools including VISSIM, Paramics, and/or various pedestrian modelling tools;
  • Experience in applying modelling results to business casing and project appraisal using cost/benefit methods for transit and multimodal transportation projects;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including the communication of complex technical information to non-technical audiences;
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and inclination toward developing transportation modelling-based opportunities for the business.

 

The ideal candidate may possess the following additional assets:

 

  • Proficiency with EMME and demonstrated experience with regional travel demand models used in key urban centres in Canada or the United States;
  • Knowledge of econometric and consumer welfare applications of macroscopic demand models (or standalone models), as well as accessibility metrics using logsums;
  • Experience using scripting-based analytical tools and statistical analyses using R, Python, SQL, SPSS, etc, as well as an understanding of Big Data applications and datasets (GTFS, MDS, etc) is considered an asset;
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills;
  • Demonstrable background of working both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team;
  • A history of achieving milestones and meeting deadlines.

In compliance with the B.C. Pay Transparency Act, the expected salary range is from $124,000 - 151,000. 
Multiple factors such as qualifications, overall experience and position responsibilities will be used to determine the successful candidate's actual salary within the expected range.
