Nuclear

Securing the future of energy.

Nuclear has a key role to play in decarbonizing energy systems and in medicine, but the challenges are numerous.

For major reactors, SMRs, fusion programs, and medical isotope and research reactors, the journey from project inception to operation is often long and complex.

Whether your challenge is with licencing, environmental permitting, development consents, stretched supply chains, technology, or safety, choosing the right partner is essential.

What can we do for you?

We understand the industry and possess the capability, experience, and capacity to help you deliver. We can help you:

Design resilient sites and assets

Our solutions provide high integrity, resilience, safety, and security, while being optimized for buildability, cost efficiency, and sustainability.

Maximize value

Nuclear power can have long-lasting net benefits for economies, communities, and the environment. Our environmental and social specialists can help you identify ways to create a positive and sustainable legacy. The result: design decisions that achieve the best for your communities, investors, customers, and the planet.

Navigate complexity and risk

We have the experience, knowledge, and breadth of skills to guide you through all aspects of site selection, licensing, safety case, permitting, and regulations.

Alleviate industry staffing constraints

We have a deep understanding of nuclear projects. We can work alongside your preferred suppliers by efficiently performing needed support work outside the nuclear island, such as geotechnical investigations and underground work, civil and structural design, and high- and low-voltage electrical work.

Services we provide

Nuclear energy engineering for a cleaner future

We work across the entire nuclear lifecycle – from generic design assessments and licensing frameworks, through all stages of project development, engineering design, construction and operation, to eventual decommissioning and waste management.

Our experience

We’ve been in the nuclear industry from the start, delivering complex and large-scale solutions for our clients across the complete project lifecycle. See our select project case studies.

  • Holtec SMR300
We supported Holtec Britain throughout the generic design assessment (GDA) of its SMR-300 in the UK. The GDA is a voluntary process adopted by technology vendors to de-risk new nuclear reactor designs for future project stages. We completed the GDA in 10 months – 15% faster than anticipated and as much as 65% faster than any previous GDA.
  • Hinkley Point C / Sizewell C, UK
We advised both post-application management for Hinkley Point C’s development consent order (DCO) and pre-application due diligence for Sizewell C’s DCO, advising on the land programme, acquisition, landowner engagement management, connection agreements and managing referencing teams.
  • Multi-purpose hYbrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications (MYRRHA) programme/Minerva
We’re designing facilities that will help researchers in Belgium gain a new understanding of the use of radioisotopes for medical purposes and to explore potential materials for nuclear fusion.
  • Sizewell C, UK
Our ongoing work on Sizewell C includes optimising the wider benefits of a new large-scale nuclear power station by co-locating energy storage and hydrogen production facilities to make use of the excess heat that nuclear plants create. The concept will create a ‘lowcarbon energy hub’ which will work in synergy with the electrical grid and local energy users. The energy hub has the potential to offer more than 3.2GW of reliable low-carbon electrical output to the UK.
  • UKHPR1000, UK
We provided engineering advisory, design support and technical review to the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) in its successful GDA for the UK version of the Hualong pressurised reactor (UKHPR1000). This included an aircraft impact analysis using a detailed finite element approach that was a first in the UK nuclear industry. It enabled a more efficient design for nuclear structures, improving constructability and enhancing safety.
  • PALLAS, Netherlands
We’re advising the Dutch Ministry in its role as financier of the new PALLAS-reactor which will replace the High Flux Reactor located in Petten. Our team has undertaken in-depth technical review of the plans to build the new reactor by 2030, including monitoring of the programme's progress, site visits and schedule, budget, risk and regulatory compliance.
  • International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), France
We provided project and risk management services to the ITER project, in which 35 nations are collaborating in southern France to create the world’s largest tokamak nuclear fusion device.
  • Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, UAE
We worked closely with ENEC and KEPCO throughout the construction of the Barakah plant. At peak, we seconded over 70 multidisciplinary colleagues on site across senior management, engineering, construction, health, safety, environment, security, planning, contract, commercial, quantity surveillance, quantity verification and material management roles. We were also responsible for major packages including the detailed design of the switch yard, environmental assessment and monitoring during construction and operation with ENEC and Nawah Energy Company (Nawah).
  • Trawsfynydd Ponds Complex, Wales
Our digital modelling of the partial demolition of this nuclear plant in Wales showed how nuclear decommissioning can be achieved in a better, faster and smarter way. We digitised historic site drawings to create a new building information model (BIM) of the site – incorporating information on the radioactivity of waste – and also produced 4D animations to help the client visualise what would happen during demolition.

People and Planet

People and Planet demonstrates and quantifies social and environmental outcomes. It combines publicly available data with project data to assess social and environmental factors alongside project priorities. Risks and opportunities are displayed on maps and dashboards, empowering decisions that create long-term benefits for people and the planet.
