Creation of a net zero route map for Glasgow City Council will be the first output of a new partnership formed by engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald and Swedish technology company ClimateView.
The partnership pools the sustainability knowledge of both businesses to create a joint offering based on ClimateView’s software platform for data-driven decisions and Mott MacDonald’s expertise in providing cities with a systemic approach to the climate transition.
The work the partnership is delivering for Glasgow City Council will support the city in achieving its commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030.
The route map will be developed by assessing the key transition steps, levers, policy and funding that will help Glasgow City Council meet its net zero ambitions. In evidencing these steps, the Council and its partners will be able to understand the shifts that are needed to reduce emissions across multiple sectors and set out its delivery plan.
Councillor Angus Millar, Glasgow's Convener for Climate, Glasgow Green Deal, Transport and City Centre Recovery said: “Creating a net zero route map is vital for the delivery of our climate plan as we manage the various actions we must take to realise our ambition of a truly sustainable Glasgow.
“Partnering with Mott MacDonald and ClimateView will give us the expertise and detailed information that ensures our route map is proportionate and scientifically sound.
“This partnership also fits with our work to develop a green investment vehicle that attracts the funding needed to accelerate Glasgow’s just transition to net zero by 2030.”
Mark Ewen, Managing Director of the Building and Cities business within Mott MacDonald said: “Cities are being challenged by how to meet their net zero ambitions and recognising the need to use data-driven new approaches, which are based on proven methodologies, to achieve that. Having that skill and knowledge in house is difficult for many cities to put in place in the timescales they need, which is why we are pleased to be supporting Glasgow in this work.”
ClimateView CEO Einar Bodström added: “As the global average temperature rises, building public-private partnerships that combine contemporary innovation and reliable expertise is absolutely crucial. Cities across Europe are taking leaps forward in using innovation and data in their green transition and Glasgow is doing just that and building on its COP26 legacy in working with us and Mott MacDonald on its new Net Zero Route Map.”
The work begins immediately with the Route Map set to be complete by October 2024.
