Mott MacDonald signs Advance Market Commitment for low carbon concrete

Mott MacDonald has signed the Advance Market Commitment (AMC) for next generation low carbon concrete, joining a coalition led by Innovate UK to accelerate the UK’s transition to net zero in construction and infrastructure.

The AMC is a collaborative initiative that creates a market for sustainable concrete solutions before they are fully commercialised, unlocking investment and accelerating their scale-up from prototypes to widespread use. By signing the AMC, Mott MacDonald has pledged to champion innovative low carbon concretes in UK projects wherever suitable. This includes advising clients, collaborating with partners and supply chains and sharing progress through case studies. The company has also committed to promoting wider industry participation, while ensuring compliance with UK legal, health, safety and environmental standards.

The AMC, announced in the Autumn Budget, seeks to aggregate demand for up to 500,000m3 of low carbon concrete. It brings together leading asset owners, designers and contractors to guarantee future purchase commitments for products meeting certain technical and commercial criteria defined by AMC’s target product profiles.

This commitment builds on Mott MacDonald’s extensive involvement in reducing the carbon footprint of the UK’s cement and concrete industry. The company is currently delivering a major research and development project focused on sustainability and the circular economy, in partnership with the Materials Processing Institute, the Mineral Products Association including major cement and concrete producers and Aston University. Supported by Innovate UK, this work is driving the standardisation of alternative cements derived from recycled materials, enabling the commercial adoption of lower carbon concrete across the UK’s built environment.

Our commitment to the AMC and involvement in Innovate UK’s decarbonisation initiatives reflects Mott MacDonald’s determination to lead the transition to low carbon construction.
