TC Energy has successfully placed its Wisconsin Reliability Project (WRP) into service, marking a major milestone in strengthening energy reliability across Wisconsin and northern Illinois. WRP replaces approximately 51 miles of aging pipeline on the ANR Pipeline system and upgrades compressor and meter stations to meet rising natural gas demand and improve efficiency.
The WRP is designed to support a projected 45% increase in natural gas demand by 2035, driven by manufacturing growth and regional development. In addition to enhancing reliability, the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 30,000 metric tons of CO2e annually – equivalent to removing around 6,500 cars from the road.
As the prime consultant, Mott MacDonald played a pivotal role in enabling successful completion of the WRP. Our team provided front-end engineering design (FEED) services, including routing reviews of proposed alignments and workspaces, risk matrices for engineering and construction, and preliminary cost estimates to support project planning.
Following the FEED phase, our scope expanded to include detailed engineering and design for regulatory filings with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Issued-for-Construction drawing packages. We delivered preliminary civil and boundary surveys to facilitate land acquisition. During construction, we supported the construction contractors, Michels Corporation and Precision Pipeline LLC, providing construction staking and as-built services.
These solutions assisted TC Energy in modernizing critical infrastructure across McHenry County (IL), Washington and Waukesha counties (WI), and Winnebago, Outagamie, and Waupaca counties (WI) – providing 144,000 dekatherms per day of incremental firm capacity on the ANR system.
Daniel Dinis, Mott MacDonald project director, commented, “By combining TC Energy’s vision with our technical expertise, WRP provides continued safe and reliable natural gas transportation service to communities and positions the US Midwest to meet future energy needs while supporting economic growth and environmental stewardship.”
