As Calgary prepares for a future where its population could double by 2076, the city is investing in infrastructure that meets both today’s needs and tomorrow’s possibilities. The Green Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) is more than just a transit project – it’s a commitment to building a more connected, accessible, and sustainable city.
Designed to integrate seamlessly into surrounding communities, the new line will support vibrant neighborhoods, reduce congestion, and encourage transit-oriented development. With construction now underway, this transformative initiative is laying the foundation for a more mobile and inclusive Calgary.
Importantly, the Green Line LRT is positioned to interface with several concurrent priorities shaping the city’s future. These include increasing access to housing and land development opportunities – critical as affordability challenges intensify – alongside major investment in a new event center adjacent to the Green Line LRT corridor. The project also aligns with broader ambitions to expand regional transit service offerings across Alberta, helping to connect communities and support long-term growth.
Spanning 11 miles (18 kilometers), this low-floor LRT line will connect Shepard (just north of 130 Avenue SE) to the downtown core, featuring 12 stations, six bridges and two elevated guideways.
Mott MacDonald, as part of the CSIX Partners consortium, is providing technical support and strategic guidance to The City of Calgary and its project partners throughout the process. Through our technical advisory services, we’ve supported the project across several key areas:
Mott MacDonald embedded our team of professionals directly within the City’s technical services team, working in close partnership to support the Green Line LRT. Working side by side with City staff and project partners, our team provided hands-on support across key areas of delivery – from resolving technical risks and refining construction schedules to identifying cost-saving opportunities and coordinating updates to the project agreement. Our role continues into the implementation phase, where we help navigate challenges during construction, testing, and commissioning.
This close collaboration ensured that decisions were not only technically sound but also aligned with the City’s broader goals for mobility, sustainability, and community integration.
The Green Line is more than a transit project – it’s a city-shaping investment in Calgary’s future.
Construction of the Southeast (SE) Segment officially began in June 2025, marking a major milestone for the project. This phase includes 9.9 miles (16 kilometers) of twin-track LRT infrastructure, 10 new stations, two Park and Ride facilities, and 28 modern low-floor CAF Urbos 100 light rail vehicles. These vehicles will enhance accessibility and allow stations to integrate seamlessly into surrounding communities.
Over $400 million in early works construction has already been completed or is underway, including utility relocations, site preparations, and demolitions. These efforts have paved the way for main construction and demonstrate the City’s commitment to delivering a high-quality, future-ready transit system.
We are proud to be supporting The City of Calgary with their new Green Line LRT transit expansion – a project that is poised to enhance quality of life, boost the local economy, and promote environmental sustainability across the region.
Our Delivery Partner team members contributed by Mott MacDonald were great to work with and played key roles throughout the Development Phase. The Delivery Partner team consistently delivered innovative solutions, resolved complex technical challenges, and collaborated effectively. I look forward to continued collaboration with a great team through our project implementation phase.Deputy Director, Green Line LRT, The City of Calgary
