Roughly the size of two football fields, with production capacity of 300MWe per unit, Holtec Britain’s SMR-300 is a first-of-its-kind advanced SMR, offering safe, reliable, and economical carbon-free power.
We supported Holtec Britain throughout the generic design assessment (GDA) of its SMR-300 in the UK. The GDA is a voluntary process adopted by technology vendors to de-risk new nuclear reactor designs for future project stages. The process allows UK independent nuclear regulators – the Office for Nuclear Regulation, the Environment Agency, and Natural Resources Wales – to assess the safety, security, and environmental implications of new reactor designs and to provide the confidence that designs will meet the UK's statutory regulatory requirements.
We supported Holtec Britain throughout the GDA process to complete in 10 months – 15% faster than anticipated and as much as 65% faster than any previous GDA. Having previously supported Holtec Britain to secure a match-funded £60M grant funding from the UK Government’s Future Nuclear Enabling Fund for the GDA, we continued to provide safety, engineering, environmental and regulatory support throughout the entire process.
We also supported the rapid mobilisation of Holtec Britain to meet the requirements to enter Step 2 of the GDA – the first ever two-step GDA – which involved fundamental technical assessment by the UK regulators. We seconded key technical and project positions and acted as topic leads for a wide range of conversations as well as providing quality, environmental, and programme management roles. Our fully integrated team participated in more than 200 engagements with the UK regulators.
Holtec has an ambition to deploy a fleet of SMR-300 in serial production by 2050, with first operations planned for the early 2030s. The SMR-300 is further undergoing safety assessment against International Atomic Energy Agency principles in multiple countries worldwide.
Demand for data centres is growing and using nuclear reactors to power them is one way to ensure the increased energy consumption doesn’t affect the UK’s ability to deliver on net zero, while creating wider community benefits.
Civil nuclear power directly employs over 77,000 people in the UK and is worth £6.1bn to the economy, but the worth is so much more than that.
Meet Jim Grundy, our development director in nuclear. His career journey is one of adaptability, opportunity seizing and long-term growth outlook.
Mariam Thomas is a project manager working within the energy sector who returned to the workforce with a clear sense of purpose and a wealth of transferable skills after a five-year career break to raise her children.
We caught up with Harry to discuss how his role as a nuclear process engineer is helping the UK to meet its net zero targets and how he is supporting new graduates to follow in his footsteps.
Meet Julia Barr, a principal commercial manager, based in our Glasgow office, whose career path in our nuclear team is a testament to adaptability, self-belief and the power of supportive teams.
We caught up with senior process safety engineer Steven Melens to talk about his role in the nuclear civil and defence team within our UK and Europe energy business.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has awarded Mott MacDonald a contract to deliver technical advisory services in support of government oversight of the Sizewell C nuclear power plant on the Suffolk coast.
Mott MacDonald’s Julia Barr and Natasha Khan have been recognised in the Top 50 Women in Engineering 2025.
Rolls-Royce Submarines has announced the joint appointment of Mott MacDonald and AtkinsRéalis as its new fissile design partners – a key milestone in the expansion of its Raynesway site in Derby.
