In my discipline (sustainability, carbon, climate, circular economy and nature, and place-based solutions) we are working with more than physical infrastructure and buildings, we are working with people’s mindsets, belief systems and their willpower to make things so.

Biography

Describe what the Mott Mac Life means to you in three words

Family, friends and fun.

What do you enjoy about working here?

The people. I work with so many self-motivated, pragmatic and industry leading people every day who I am constantly learning from and developing with.

Tell us about your specialism and why you chose it

I specialise in sustainability, carbon and climate resilience. My career started in building science. I really enjoyed graphic design, art and exploring technology and was fascinated by the design of buildings, how and why we build the way we do and how buildings make people feel. I wanted to help build comfortable places to live, work and play. However, through the holistic systems thinking I have learnt throughout my career, I think my personal values of inclusivity, future thinking and doing what is right is why I enjoy the broader sustainability topics. Now I integrate sustainability into all our markets at Mott MacDonald. I also look beyond sustainability to regenerative practice and design to understand how we can motivate the industry to give back to nature.

How has your career progressed since joining?

I am currently participating in an internal regional leadership development course. It’s a self-development opportunity that is supporting my journey into leadership, being purposeful in shaping my style of leadership as well as giving me the tools to be a good leader. This opportunity is giving me more clarity on the transition of technical work I personally deliver, to developing a well-rounded and motivated team that enjoys coming to work to create better outcomes for our clients.

How do you demonstrate Technical Excellence in your work?

I think to demonstrate Technical Excellence in your work, you need to care about and take pride in the work you do and deliver.

How do you contribute to Mott MacDonald making a difference to people and the planet?

The nature of my role means that I’m helping to create positive change for people and the planet day-to-day. I conduct sustainability risk assessments for our projects across all markets. I also deliver local environment management and implementation plans and promote sustainability and social outcomes to our clients.

Where in the world has your role taken you?

I have lived and worked in New Zealand and Australia; however, the work I have done over the past 20 years has been international. I’ve worked on projects and collaborated with people from all across the globe, including Abu Dhabi, Singapore, South Africa and the United States.

What are your career highlights and achievements?

Inspiring clients to adopt environmentally sustainable design outcomes, such as passive heating and cooling in buildings and promoting natural daylight through building performance modelling. A defining moment was achieving my first 6 Star Green Star project, symbolising world excellence in sustainability and achieving my first IS Leading Rating.
