Tunnels and wastewater or sewage infrastructure are two of my great passions. Both are crucial for public health, environmental protection and long-term global sustainability and often they go completely unseen. It brings me great pleasure and professional pride to be involved in constructing these civil engineering wonders that are the foundations of modern society and vital for future resilience.

Biography

With more than 30 years of international tunnelling and civil engineering experience, Gary specialises in delivering complex underground and surface water projects. His portfolio encompasses assignments in Qatar, Pakistan, Libya, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Sweden and the UK. Since 2018, he has led projects for Mott MacDonald in Doha and directed design review, construction supervision, cost control and stakeholder engagement within complex contractual and regulatory frameworks. As project director in Qatar, Gary is responsible for end-to-end project governance, stakeholder engagement, risk and commercial management, and the integration of digital engineering tools to enhance performance and sustainability. His technical expertise in challenging ground conditions spans slurry, earth-pressure balance, open and double-shield tunnel boring machines, New Austrian Tunnelling Method and Sequential Excavation Method, pipejacking and hard-rock excavation, enabling robust solutions in both dense urban centres and remote environments.

He emphasises capacity building through knowledge transfer, forging strong client partnerships and nurturing multidisciplinary teams. Under his guidance, projects have achieved top industry safety and quality ratings, while setting new benchmarks for operational resilience and environmental stewardship in a region where water security is paramount.
