Najah Abdallah leads design strategies for Dubai’s metro projects, combining technical expertise with collaboration to deliver complex transport systems efficiently and sustainably.

Najah Abdallah.

Tell us about your role and where you are based

For the past two years, I’ve been leading design management strategies for mega metro projects in Dubai.

Investment in the city’s metro system is driving lots of important projects that are expanding metro capacity and improving the flow of passengers in and around stations.

Rail projects are highly complex, involving multiple disciplines, teams and stakeholders. Staying aligned with connected systems, codes, standards and operational requirements is critical. In my role I focus on ensuring quality delivery and fostering collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to achieve seamless, and efficient outcomes.

I also support on the delivery of bid proposals and create career plans to help colleagues interested in design management.

Why did you choose you career path? Why Mott MacDonald?

I’ve always been passionate about shaping infrastructure that improves communities and connects people.

Design management allows me to combine technical expertise with leadership on projects that transform urban and transport systems, it’s a role that challenges me to think strategically, working with clients to validate and update their masterplans and models to meet future needs.

Design management also fosters collaboration across disciplines to deliver projects efficiently and sustainably. Teamwork at Mott MacDonald is really impressive. I am surrounded by people with different skills and experiences. It's easy for me to get support from around the world when I need it.

Mott MacDonald stands out for its commitment to making a positive difference globally. I’m proud to be part of an organisation that not only delivers world-class projects but also prioritises social outcomes, supports employee development and offers employee ownership.

Najah Abdallah.

What has been your proudest achievement?

Graduating with distinction in my MBA while being new at Mott MacDonald. It was a tough period with long nights and many challenges, but I managed both work and study successfully.

What are some of the most exciting or innovative projects you’ve been trusted to lead or contribute to?

One of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on was a major metro station expansion on one of the busiest lines in Dubai.

The challenge was to design and deliver the expansion without disrupting ongoing operations, closing the station was not an option. This meant dismantling existing systems, installing new ones, and ensuring they were fully tested, commissioned, and operational, all while maintaining passenger safety and service continuity.

The project required innovative design solutions, phased construction planning, and close coordination with multiple stakeholders. We also had to account for the surrounding iconic structures and extremely high footfall. Working within these constraints made the project both complex and highly rewarding.

How do you collaborate with colleagues from different specialisms to achieve common goals?

I believe collaboration starts with clear communication and mutual respect for each discipline. On complex transport projects, I work closely with engineers, architects, planners and regulatory teams to align design objectives with operational requirements.

Regular workshops, integrated digital platforms and proactive problem-solving help us achieve shared goals efficiently and effectively.

Whatever the challenge, the customer is always number one in our designs and plans. Their safety and comfort while they are using the system is our priority.

Najah Abdallah.

How is project design, planning and delivery different in the transport sector compared with other markets?

Transport projects are unique because they involve live operational environments, strict safety standards and high public impact. Unlike other sectors, you often have to design and build without disrupting existing services, which demands innovative phasing strategies and meticulous risk management.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start their career at Mott MacDonald?

My advice is to embrace the culture of collaboration and continuous learning. Be proactive in seeking challenges and building relationships across teams. Stay curious and be adaptable.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that not everything is in your control. Sometimes, no matter how much effort you put in, things take time or happen differently than planned. Accepting this and staying patient has been the hardest but most valuable lessons for me.

What do you like about living and working in the UAE?

I enjoy the dynamic and diverse environment the UAE offers. It’s a hub for major infrastructure projects, which provides exciting professional opportunities. Beyond work, the UAE’s multicultural setting, modern lifestyle and focus on sustainability make it a great place to live and grow personally and professionally.

I live just 15 minutes from the beach in Dubai, which is perfect for me. The beach gives me a sense of relaxation and freedom after a busy week. Being close to the coastline also means I can spend time outdoors, enjoy the beautiful views, and recharge whenever I need to.
