About the business unit

The Buildings Unit (BLD) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.  


Overview of role
We are seeking a qualified and enthusiastic Principal Information Communication Technology (ICT) Consulting Engineer to join an existing team within the Building Services Discipline (serving the Built Environment and other Sectors).  The Consulting Engineer will be mainly project-delivery focussed but support technical capability, staff development, project profitability and project bids. 

The ICT Team enjoys successful client relationships in multiple sectors including Aviation Buildings, Utilities and Energy, Residential, Defence, Healthcare, Local Authority, Sports and other sectors. The Team also supports work within the UK and further abroad.   

You will work across a variety of ICT infrastructure and systems including but not limited to building ICT, building ELV, cabling systems, data centres, telecommunication systems, voice and data systems, IP networks, audio visual systems, electronic security systems.  

We are recruiting a candidate to build client relationships (both internally and externally) through excellent project delivery, communication and engagement skills. The candidate will be self-motivated and capable of delivering high quality designs with minimum of supervision to time and budget.  

The successful candidate will have a strong background and proficiency in collaborative consultancy and design of ICT infrastructure and systems. You will also demonstrate experience and capability across the project lifecycle from requirements capture, concept design through detailed design, support through delivery and handover. Strong written and verbal communication of technical issues to varied technical and non-technical audiences will be key to your success in the role.

As the successful candidate you will typically be responsible for: 

  • Demonstrating technical expertise and applying this to delegated projects.  
  • Managing the delivery of delegated projects. 
  • Compliance with Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, current legislation and standards associated with all engineering aspects of delegated projects. 
  • Carrying out consultancy, design and calculation work using relevant industry software (e.g. Revit etc.). 
  • Developing, maintaining and monitoring programmes for scheduling and reporting on deliverables across specific projects. 
  • Working, liaising, coordinating with associated engineering disciplines as part of delivering projects. 
  • Supporting graduate/early career professionals, act as technical mentor, providing in depth knowledge whilst proactively undertaking coaching and development activities.  
  • Managing of internal and external stakeholders collaboratively, including ensuring client satisfaction and pursuing and promoting opportunities with potential and established clients. 
  • Maximising profitability of projects, monitoring against budget, reacting and anticipating potential problems and communicating in line with client expectations. 
  • Supporting senior managers running the commercial and contractual side of projects. 
  • Supporting business development efforts including contribution to bids. 
  • Working at various project phases including feasibility, concept & detail design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, handover and in-use. 
  • Keeping updated on technical standards, technical and product developments, identifying opportunities for training, development, and growth. 
  • Assist in business development and professional excellence activities, including technical and commercial input to customer proposals, development of best-practice materials and methods costing/pricing. 

 

Candidate Specification
As a Principal ICT Consulting Engineer you will be involved in a range of small to large projects. The role will be challenging, demanding, varied and offer opportunities for skill set and career development. 

You will work autonomously within a team carrying out consultancy and design of ICT infrastructure and systems across our projects. You will potentially manage several projects and the work of others. 

You will be able to demonstrate technical experience in delivering a range of building and/or infrastructure projects across our working sectors. A fully qualified and experienced professional having the breadth of experience, ability and maturity to make good decisions across the key areas of their recognised discipline and demonstrating one or more of the following attributes (however, please bear in mind that you may not need to meet 100% of these to be considered for the position). 

  • CEng and a member of the IET or CIBSE (or recognised equivalent). 
  • Have experience of leading on ICT and systems elements and some multi-disciplinary projects. 
  • Have experience of mentoring and leading graduate/early career professionals. 
  • Be enthusiastic and ambitious with a strong teamwork ethic. 
  • Have excellent communication skills, including report writing and presentations. 
  • Have the ability to lead ICT and systems elements of one large project or a portfolio of smaller projects. 
  • Have some experience of managing client relationships and expectations with accountability for one or more key customer relationships and delivery of outputs.  
  • Working as an ICT and systems specialist providing high level advice to others.  
  • Track record of achievement and innovation, delivering complex projects or new services  
  • Managing and supervising the work of other professionally qualified staff.  
  • Well-developed professional network externally and desire to build internal networks within the organisation. 
  • Up to date knowledge of current building regulations, legislation and standards applicable in building / infrastructure design in the Built Environment. 
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work on own initiative and the confidence to make decisions. 
  • Ability to work well collaboratively, both internally and with external partners and sub-contractors
